which is the presentation layer.

Here we're going to talk about the functionality of

Layer 6 which focuses primarily on formatting,

compression, and encryption.

The main purpose of

the presentation layer is formatting,

making sure that data on one computer is

converted to a universal format

that could be understood on other systems.

For instance, if you're on a Mac,

totally different machine than a Windows PC,

but you can transmit data to me because

of presentation layer capabilities.

The conversion of data from

a more proprietary format to what we used to use,

which was ASCII,

what we use now, Unicode,

that universal format,

that's done at the presentation layer.

I will also mention,

this is the only layer of

the OSI model that does not have any protocols.

There are formats that happen here, but no protocols.

We said formatting,

change to universal text,

I will mention also compression.

Compression is where we

remove redundancy so that we can get

transfer of information or transfer of

data quicker and using less bandwidth.

Then encryption. Now let me tell you,

encryption operates at multiple layers of

the OSI model because there's

different types of encryption.

We could have hardware encryption that

Layer 1, we have IPSec,

that's at Layer 3,
00:00
we have SSL and TLS,
00:00
which are across layers 4-7.

When we're at Layer 6, we're talking

about file level encryption,

we're talking about, like Windows uses, EFS.

That's Layer 6 types of encryption.

Formatting, encryption,

and compression are the

>> primary focuses here at Layer 6,

>> and remember, there are

no protocols that operate at this layer as well.

This is a short layer,

not a ton to it,

but obviously a very important layer
