>> We're going to be talking about public
00:00
cloud deployments in this session.
00:00
Our objectives are really to just
00:00
define the elements of the public cloud,
00:00
talk about the benefits of the public cloud,
00:00
as well as the limitations.
00:00
The main benefit of
00:00
public cloud deployments are that
00:00
its low cost, it's easily available,
00:00
you just can connect to this public cloud over
00:00
the Internet and begin either running applications,
00:00
starting environments, or putting your data in there
00:00
to access some publicly available service.
00:00
The benefit of that is that at low cost,
00:00
partially because this is a multi-tenant environment,
00:00
that means multiple customers are
00:00
going to be running their applications,
00:00
or using shared applications that are
00:00
running on the same set of underlying hardware.
00:00
Although these benefits of it
00:00
being shared to everyone in low cost,
00:00
it also creates many of
00:00
the risks that are associated with the public cloud.
00:00
Because the public cloud is available to
00:00
so many different companies and individuals,
00:00
the data that goes in there,
00:00
it's stored often on
00:00
the same system and on the same hardware.
00:00
It really isn't the appropriate place
00:00
for highly sensitive information.
00:00
If for instance, there's a lower sensitivity,
00:00
the public cloud is a good option for that.
00:00
But anything that's very highly sensitive,
00:00
such as personally identifiable information,
00:00
health information,
00:00
anything that's very confidential
00:00
or secretive to the organization,
00:00
the public cloud probably isn't
00:00
the best deployment solution for that information.
00:00
There are lots of examples of public clouds.
00:00
All of the large hosting
00:00
>> providers, AWS, Microsoft Azure,
00:00
>> Google Cloud, they
00:00
offer public cloud operative options,
00:00
and this is great for anyone who wants
00:00
to learn about the cloud,
00:00
spin up and break down environments,
00:00
and do so worth at very little cost.
00:00
There are lots of
00:00
applications that have their own cloud;
00:00
Oracle Cloud, Salesforce,
00:00
IBM, many of them offer
00:00
traditional cloud services as well
00:00
as their own applications in the cloud.
00:00
Many individuals may be surprised
00:00
to learn that applications that they use,
00:00
the Dropbox Storage Service or AppleCloud,
00:00
those are public clouds as well.
00:00
Let's take a moment to reflect on the public cloud.
00:00
What are the reasons that a company might
00:00
use a public cloud deployment model?
00:00
Well, they really want an affordable,
00:00
easily accessible option to do storage,
00:00
or put applications out in
00:00
the cloud that aren't really
00:00
processing highly sensitive information.
00:00
That dovetails into the next question
00:00
or the reasons a company might want
00:00
to avoid using the public cloud. It's the public cloud.
00:00
You really have to ensure that you're preferably
00:00
protecting your information and
00:00
through encryption out there,
00:00
and because so many different people have
00:00
access to these cloud platforms,
00:00
public clouds are innately more risky
00:00
because information can rid
00:00
or be accessed by
00:00
unauthorized parties if
00:00
things aren't configured properly.
00:00
Basically, the more people
00:00
>> will have access to the cloud,
00:00
>> the more opportunity there are for
00:00
threat actors to try and exploit vulnerabilities,
00:00
and any security lapses that occur in the public cloud
00:00
create potential opportunities for
00:00
information to become compromised.
00:00
Then we talked about some of the public clouds
00:00
they might use every day in work or personal life,
00:00
such as that AppleCloud,
00:00
you're putting your latest pictures
00:00
up there accessing music.
00:00
You should think about some of the other public clouds
00:00
specifically that you use
00:00
>> at work or your personal life.
00:00
>> In this module, we talked about
00:00
the benefits of using that public cloud,
00:00
cheap, easily accessible.
00:00
The limitations of the public cloud,
00:00
well, the more people will have access to it,
00:00
it raises the risk and likelihood
00:00
that security-related risks can compound a curb.
00:00
We talked about examples of public clouds as well
00:00
as those that are used by
00:00
businesses as well as individuals.
