>> We've talked about what business continuity is and
00:00
what the disaster appropriate process should entail,
00:00
but how and when do you actually declare disaster?
00:00
In this lesson, we're going to talk about how
00:00
disasters are declared, and then what
00:00
should be considered when designing an effective
00:00
>> disaster recovery / business continuity process,
00:00
>> and then what are the roles and
00:00
responsibilities within
00:00
the business continuity / disaster recovery process.
00:00
Overall, when it comes to
00:00
disaster recovery and business continuity,
00:00
an organization should really think through
00:00
what circumstances could potentially
00:00
compromise or inhibit
00:00
our critical business functions and what are
00:00
the underlying technological pieces that need to be
00:00
maintained to
00:00
preserve our business and continue operations.
00:00
Thinking about it that way can
00:00
really help figure out what
00:00
are the criterias for actually declaring a disaster.
00:00
If you just leave it up to human judgment,
00:00
people may be either reticent or to gung-ho
00:00
about declaring a disaster and use
00:00
resources in an ineffective manner.
00:00
Creating specific criteria for
00:00
either operational metrics or
00:00
availability metrics that are used to declare
00:00
disasters can help expedite
00:00
the process and create clarity about when
00:00
a disaster recovery scenario
00:00
needs to be declared and implemented.
00:00
Another important thing is determining who
00:00
within the organization can declare a disaster.
00:00
Then it's real important to assign
00:00
this role because it's up to that person's judgment and
00:00
then also in a business continuity situation
00:00
>> when that person isn't available,
00:00
>> who then takes on
00:00
>> the responsibility of declaring and coordinating
00:00
disaster recovery should that
00:00
first individual not be available.
00:00
Then within any disaster recovery
00:00
or business continuity process,
00:00
you want to break out the roles,
00:00
whether it's restoring the technical operations,
00:00
coordinate communication of the media,
00:00
coordinating interaction, or communication with
00:00
any fire and rescue services that
00:00
are needed to specific individuals.
00:00
Make sure those people understand
00:00
their roles and responsibilities.
00:00
What materials or plans exist and ensure that
00:00
the disaster recovery and business continuity process
00:00
>> is rehearsed often so that people know
00:00
>> what they need to do,
00:00
>> what their role entails, and how to do it.
00:00
Let's reflect for a moment.
00:00
How's the disaster recovery process
00:00
initiated in your organization?
00:00
Many people aren't always exactly sure how it works,
00:00
so I would ask you really to look at
00:00
your disaster recovery plans, and more importantly,
00:00
look at your business continuity planning scenarios.
00:00
A year ago, I don't think that many organizations had
00:00
global pandemic in their business continuity strategy.
00:00
However, more than ever,
00:00
we've realized that it looks incredibly disruptive.
00:00
Organizations had to have their
00:00
>> employees work from home immediately
00:00
>> and quarantine to effectively try
00:00
>> to mitigate the pandemic.
00:00
>> I'm sure you attend many
00:00
business continuity strategies now.
00:00
That takes us to our second question,
00:00
how familiar are you with
00:00
>> your disaster recovery process?
00:00
>> This is an important thing to
00:00
learn about and understand because it'll help
00:00
you get a better understanding of
00:00
those critical elements within
00:00
your business or identified disconnect
00:00
between the technical perspective
00:00
of the critical elements
00:00
and the business' perception of
00:00
the critical elements for continuity.
00:00
Then what business continuity situations
00:00
have your organization considered?
00:00
The plan should really be restricted to
00:00
those things that can directly affect
00:00
the most critical aspects of operations
00:00
and those things that are most
00:00
likely and we'll have the highest impact.
00:00
You can't plan for every scenario,
00:00
so you've to be disciplined about what are
00:00
the most likely things to happen.
00:00
In summary, we talked about the thought process
00:00
for declaring a disaster.
00:00
We also talked about the roles
00:00
and responsibilities that are
00:00
needed for effective business continuity
00:00
and disaster recovery.
00:00
Then we went a little bit into reflecting
00:00
on how should an organization create
00:00
criteria around disaster recovery
00:00
and business continuity declarations.
00:00
I'll see you in the next module.
