Implementing Failover Cluster Instances
The "Implementing Failover Cluster Instances" module provides you with the instructions and devices to develop your hands on skills in the following topics: Creating a failover cluster with a single node, Managing the failover cluster.
The Implementing Failover Cluster Instances module provides you with the instructions and devices to develop your hands on skills in the following topics.
- Creating a failover cluster with a single node
- Managing the failover cluster
Lab time: It will take approximately 60 minutes to complete this lab.
Three lab objectives are covered in this lab.
- Create a new failover cluster
- Add or remove nodes in a SQL Server failover cluster
- Add a disk to CSV on a failover cluster
Exercise 1 - Creating a Failover Cluster with a Single Node
SQL Server 2016 provides Always on Failover Cluster instances as one of the options for creating high availability at the server-instance level. A Failover Cluster Instance (FCI) is a SQL Server instance that is installed across Windows Server Clustering (WSFC) nodes. If the current SQL Server node becomes unavailable, the FCI provides failover from one WSFC node to another.
To install a SQL Server FCI, you must run the SQL Server setup program on each node of the failover cluster. In this exercise, you will create and configure a single-node SQL Server FCI on PLABSQL02.
Exercise 2 - Managing the Failover Cluster
To provide the high-availability capability to a single-node SQL Server FCI, you must add nodes to that FCI. To achieve this task, you must run Setup with Add Node functionality on each node that you want to add to the SQL Server failover cluster.
In this exercise, you will add the SQL01 device to the SQL Server failover cluster instance on the SQL02 device that you created in Exercise 1. You will then learn how to remove a node from the SQL Server failover cluster. You will then learn how to add a disk to Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV) in the failover cluster. A CSV provides simultaneous read-write access to the same disk that is provisioned as an NTFS volume.
