Introduction

Welcome to the Enable Nested Virtualization Practice Lab. In this module, you will be provided with the instructions and devices needed to develop your hands-on skills.

Learning Outcomes

In this module, you will complete the following exercises:

  • Exercise 1 - Turn on Nested Virtualization

After completing this lab, you will be able to:

  • Use Windows PowerShell to enable nested virtualization

Exam Objectives

The following exam objectives are covered in this lab:

  • Understand server virtualization - nested virtualization

Lab Duration

It will take approximately 30 minutes to complete this lab.

Exercise 1 - Configure Nested Virtualization

In live production environments, Hyper-V feature is installed on a physical computer with high-end system specifications equipped with multiprocessors, terabytes of memory, gigabit ethernet network adapters and ultra-fast solid-state disks that support hardware fault tolerance. There will be scenarios wherein you will not have enough physical servers that can accommodate Hyper-V such as in a lab environment where you can test a proof-of-concept without the risk of compromising stability in a production network. Another example is in a training venue where you need to install more than one Hyper-V server for attending participants. This is where the concept of “virtualizing a virtualization server” solves these limitations.

Nested virtualization is a new feature in Windows Server 2016 that enables you to run Hyper-V Server to within a guest virtual machine. Virtualizing a Hyper-V host provides many benefits to an organization such as setting up a Hyper-V lab and test multiple machine scenario without purchasing additional server hardware.

In this exercise, you will enable nested virtualization for one of the guest virtual machines in PLABDM01. After which you will install Hyper-V services on the selected VM and verify that the services work.
