The Configuring Hyper-V Replica module provides you with the instruction and server hardware to develop your hands on skills in the defined topics. This module includes the following exercises:
- Prepare System Requirements for Hyper-V Replica
- Managing Hyper-V Replica
- Understanding Hyper-V Failover
Estimated time to complete this lab: 90 minutes.
Exercise 1 - Prepare System Requirements for Hyper-V Replica
To ensure high availability of Hyper-V virtual machines to users or applications, Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V supports replication of virtual machines between Hyper-V servers by creating a Hyper-V replica.
Hyper-V replica is a new feature in Windows Server 2012 where it asynchronously replicates virtual machines from a primary server in the main site to a replica server typically located in a secondary site. The location of the Hyper-V servers can be on the same high-speed network or in a separate geographical location spanning a wide area network (WAN) link.
Exercise 2 - Managing Hyper-V Replication
Hyper-V Manager provides a straight-forward process for enabling replication of virtual machines between a primary server and the replica server.
In this exercise, you will turn on replication of virtual machines to occur from PLABHYPERV02 the primary server to PLABHYPERV01 the replica server. In addition, you will learn how to monitor replication of virtual machines between Hyper-V servers.
Exercise 3 - Understanding Hyper-V Failover
Failover is the process of protecting mission-critical applications where a standby server automatically takes over when the main server fails due to hardware or software-related issues.
Hyper-V server provides fault tolerance as it supports failover of virtual machines to another server in the event the main server hosting the guest virtual machines becomes unavailable due to unexpected system problems.
In this exercise, you will learn how Hyper-V failover works when Hyper-V replication is configured between virtualization servers.
