Hello, everyone. And welcome back to cyber worries and user physical security. Course
00:06
I'm your instructor. Corey holds her, and this is lesson 1.3. Modernizing ancient security.
00:13
I have three learning objectives to this lesson. First will discuss what lessons we can take away from ancient physical security.
00:21
Then we'll enter the question of how can ancient security measures be applied today, and we'll finish up discussing modern measures and how they differ from the ancient wounds.
00:32
We discussed ancient security measures in the last lesson,
00:37
and many of those techniques still apply today. Ultimately, we want to keep the unwanted people out. We want to secure the people within,
00:48
and we want to protect. The resource is now in this situation we're not. We're not necessarily talking about law enforcement here. We're talking about security posture for a business, but for them, their business secrets, their manufacturing supply chain,
01:06
all of those things go into what they want to protect.
01:08
And ultimately, their security strategies have to support the bigger strategy of their business as a whole.
01:19
So what techniques still apply? Well, we still can employ walls.
01:25
We can still employ towers and gates, although towers would beam or with a militaristic or prison setting, so you won't necessarily see those around the business. But definitely
01:37
gated campuses. Will. You will control the flow of traffic by using gates. We can still employ open spaces and employ security there to make sure that if the person gets through the outer perimeter, they're still confronted by security measures within the campus.
01:53
And then,
01:56
unlike, are similar to
01:59
the, uh,
02:00
the royalty of old, who would hire nights to protect the towns and their minute arms. We hire personals, private security services to provide that security function.
02:15
So what are some new new considerations that we have to consider? Well, first of all, we have the concept that we discussed in the last lesson about location. We discussed how important it was to place your town. Your world town or your stronghold nears certain physical features or physical terrain
02:34
to a hand security.
02:35
Now it takes on slightly different, a slightly different approach.
02:39
First, we look at things like access to infrastructure, where the roads that we're going to need that are going to provide, unlike for first responders in case of a disaster and an outlet. If We have to evacuate the people from our campus or from our building.
02:58
We wanna have proximity to that help
03:00
again. First responders being able to respond quickly to a fire or some kind of disaster is critical. And then we also look at things like utilities. Natural resource is and like and having having them easily available to us.
03:20
And how do we modernize the old techniques? Well,
03:23
we used technology and it doesn't change why we do the things we just changes. How we do. Video cameras provide us a 3 60 view that never gets tired. It also allows us to use fewer people to monitor the perimeter or monitor around are the area that we're trying to secure
03:43
because they can.
03:44
Two people could watch cameras vice, having all these people out patrolling.
03:52
We can also use technology to improve our communications, to act, to enhance the limiting of access to certain facilities.
04:01
We could have, for example,
04:04
maybe it's ah,
04:06
magnetic swipe card or an or if I D card that prevent basically needs to be used to gain access to certain portions of the building, and then we also have modern transportation, which has its its great advantages as well, meaning we can get people
04:24
two location of a situation much quicker than
04:29
having them go on foot.
04:32
So what are some new with new techniques? Well,
04:36
we have tools to use for identification purposes. Whether it's biometrics are if I d locators, which we can use. We also have things like multi factor authentication, which can enhance security, swipe a card
04:50
and punch a pin number into a
04:55
into a keypad in order to gain access. This is obviously
05:01
an enhancement,
05:04
so let's do a quick check on learning.
05:06
How is location important in modern, modern physical security, It provides good visibility of those approaching.
05:14
It increases the resale value of the property,
05:16
its proximity to raw materials or quicker response by first responders during a disaster. I'll give you a few seconds to think about it, and then we'll discuss.
05:31
And the answer is
05:34
well. Some of these other aspects are still important. Like Bree sell value and proximity to raw material materials.
05:43
They don't really enhance security
05:46
now. Providing good visibility might be important, but we can achieve that through cameras and through other technology needs. But location is very important today because it gives us
05:59
proper location will actually mean quicker response time five by first responders.
06:06
So in this lesson, we discussed, uh, what we can take away from ancient physical security. We also looked at how ancient security measures can still be applied today. And we finished up looking at the modern tools and techniques that we can use and how they differ from ancient ones. I thank you for taking time for joining me in this lesson.
06:26
I look forward to seeing you in the next one.
