>> Hey, Cybrarians. Welcome back to
00:00
the Linux plus course here at Cybrary.
00:00
I'm your instructor Rob Goelz.
00:00
In today's lesson, we're going to have
00:00
a Linux desktop environment comparison.
00:00
Upon completion of today's lesson,
00:00
you're going to be able to understand
00:00
the purpose of a desktop environment,
00:00
differentiate between
00:00
the different desktop environments,
00:00
and then also we'll have a demo
00:00
at the end of the lesson where
00:00
we'll see how to navigate
00:00
the different desktop environments.
00:00
The desktop environment really is just providing
00:00
a GUI and it's the appearance and
00:00
also the several components that run underneath it to
00:00
provide that gooey environment for us in Linux.
00:00
The display manager is a desktop login screen.
00:00
Sometimes if you're running
00:00
different desktop environment,
00:00
you can choose between them on the login screen.
00:00
The Windows manager is a client program that is used to
00:00
determine how the windows are
00:00
presented to you on the desktop.
00:00
The File Manager is what we
00:00
use to perform graphical file maintenance.
00:00
If we want to work with files
00:00
but not do it from the command line,
00:00
we can use the File Manager program to do so.
00:00
Now, there are five different desktop environments
00:00
that are covered on the exam.
00:00
The first one is KDE Plasma that's
00:00
used by openSUSE and Kubuntu.
00:00
It uses the SDDM display manager and
00:00
the Dolphin File Manager and
00:00
the Windows manager is called Kwin.
00:00
Now, Cinnamon is the default
00:00
desktop environment for Linux Mint,
00:00
but you can also run MATE on Linux Mint.
00:00
We'll see that when we
00:00
>> talk about MATE in a minute here.
00:00
>> Now, Cinnamon uses the display manager LightDM,
00:00
the File Manager Nemo,
00:00
and the Windows manager Muffin.
00:00
Unity is an older desktop environment that was
00:00
used in Ubuntu before 17.10.
00:00
I'm actually going to demo it later in
00:00
a Ubuntu 16 just so that we can see it.
00:00
But it's important to keep in
00:00
mind that Unity isn't really
00:00
the default desktop environment
00:00
for any distribution anymore.
00:00
It is one that you can choose to run.
00:00
It is very nice, but it's not really
00:00
officially supported by Canonical,
00:00
who owns Ubuntu anymore.
00:00
The display manager in unity is also LightDM,
00:00
the File Manager is Nautilus
00:00
and the Windows manager is Metacity.
00:00
Now when you're talking about Gnome,
00:00
this is the default desktop environment
00:00
for Fedora and for Debian.
00:00
When we're in CentOS or running Ubuntu,
00:00
this is going to be what we're used to seeing.
00:00
Gnome is the desktop environment we see there.
00:00
The display manager for Gnome is a GDM.
00:00
The File Manager is just called
00:00
files and the Window manager is called Mutter.
00:00
Then finally we have Mate.
00:00
Later on today I'm going to demo this unmanned manager,
00:00
the manager or Linux distribution,
00:00
but it can also be an option in
00:00
Linux meant you could run cinnamon or mate.
00:00
Now may also uses the LightDM display manager.
00:00
The File Manager is called Caja or cava,
00:00
and then the Windows Manager is called Marco.
00:00
Let's have a look at all of these different
00:00
desktop environments with some Demo Time.
00:00
Here we are in our demo environment.
00:00
The first thing we're going to see here
00:00
is Gnome and this is CentOS.
00:00
Our Windows Manager here are
00:00
our display manager that we've seen when we
00:00
log in is as GDM.
00:00
This is really GDM that we see here.
00:00
It has this weird thing where you
00:00
have to move your mouse up to get in.
00:00
Then he logged into the system.
00:00
Once you've logged in here are
00:00
going to be brought to the desktop.
00:00
The desktop here you're going to
00:00
have the access to the file system
00:00
right from the desktop is if you have that setup, I do.
00:00
What this does is it takes you into the File Manager,
00:00
which is just called Files,
00:00
and then the Windows manager that allows us to do
00:00
everything in the back-end and move
00:00
things around is called Mutter.
00:00
That's pretty much all that you need
00:00
to know about working
00:00
with CentOS and Ubuntu
00:00
is going to be generally the same layout here.
00:00
Everything is controlled from up
00:00
here in the upper left-hand corner.
00:00
Then if you wanted to do anything like shut down,
00:00
you would go up here and click on
00:00
the shutdown option where you
00:00
can choose what you want to do.
00:00
You can also choose to lock the screen from up
00:00
here by clicking on this icon and I'll do that.
00:00
Now let's take a look at the next desktop environment.
00:00
The next desktop environment we're going to
00:00
look at today is KDE.
00:00
This is actually running openSUSE.
00:00
We're going to log in here.
00:00
Remember that the display manager
00:00
that we use to log in when we're
00:00
talking about KDE, it's called SDDM.
00:00
Let's go ahead and log in here.
00:00
Now that we're logged in SDDM,
00:00
we can open the File Manager.
00:00
The File Manager here is called Dolphin.
00:00
When we open this app we'll see that
00:00
the says home dolphin and that is
00:00
the File Manager that we have in KDE.
00:00
We can close out of that but this is everything
00:00
that's managing what we're doing with
00:00
moving around Windows here.
00:00
That's the Windows Manager which is called Quinn.
00:00
Now note that when you're working in KDE,
00:00
all of your applications and stuff are
00:00
down here in the lower left-hand corner.
00:00
This is going to be more akin to
00:00
using a Windows environment,
00:00
where you sometimes see the Start menu down here.
00:00
From here you can do things like
00:00
get into your applications,
00:00
look at the computer,
00:00
look at the history, and then
00:00
also you can go over here to leave,
00:00
to lock the screen shut down,
00:00
or restart the computer.
00:00
Once again, I'll go ahead and lock the screen and
00:00
we'll move on to our next desktop environment.
00:00
The next desktop environment
00:00
we're going to look at today is
00:00
Linux Mint and this is actually running cinnamon.
00:00
Now the display manager that we
00:00
use to login to Linux Mint,
00:00
this is actually called LightDM right here.
00:00
We're going to use that and get logged
00:00
in. Hopefully, it won't.
00:00
Let's try that pass-through one more time.
00:00
Let's get logged in here.
00:00
Now we're into the user environment
00:00
for Linux Mint. This is cinnamon.
00:00
Cinnamon is the desktop environment on Linux Mint.
00:00
We can see that this is very similar to KDE
00:00
in terms of the layout and then
00:00
our menu options are all down here.
00:00
Everything that we see, we can
00:00
also go up here and open our files.
00:00
The File Manager here is actually called Nemo.
00:00
We're talking about cinnamon and
00:00
the windows manager that allows us
00:00
to interact with these windows and move things around.
00:00
Well, that's called Muffin.
00:00
Now if we wanted to go ahead and just lock this system,
00:00
we can go up here and click on the Lock button,
00:00
and then we've locked it and we
00:00
can move on to our next desktop environment.
00:00
The next desktop environment
00:00
I want to take a look at with
00:00
you today is the mate desktop environment,
00:00
which is in Manjaro.
00:00
The display manager will log into here.
00:00
Let's just make sure if type that password right.
00:00
Apologies. The display manager
00:00
we just use to log in there
00:00
>> on Manjaro is also light DM,
00:00
>> but we can see where we land here.
00:00
It's just a slightly different graphical experience.
00:00
If we go ahead and double-click on the home icon here,
00:00
we can see that this has opened up on Manjaro.
00:00
The File Manager here is Caja.
00:00
The Windows Manager we used some of everything
00:00
around is actually called Marco.
00:00
If we wanted to go ahead and lock on this system,
00:00
we could go up here and just click on the lock icon,
00:00
and that will lock it out for us.
00:00
Let's go on and take a look at
00:00
the last desktop environment.
00:00
In the last desktop environment,
00:00
we're going to look at today is unity.
00:00
Again, you can see up
00:00
>> here this is running on Ubuntu 16.
00:00
>> You can see down here it says Ubuntu 16
00:00
for long-term support.
00:00
That's what the LTS means.
00:00
We're going to go ahead and just log in here
00:00
and get into the system.
00:00
Now on unity, the display manager is also LightDM,
00:00
so you can see now we've seen
00:00
three different desktop environments
00:00
with light DM and they
00:00
all had very different displays for the login screen.
00:00
It's very flexible. You do a lot of things with it.
00:00
Inside of here, we can go into the File Manager.
00:00
If we click on the Files here,
00:00
It's going to come up in just a minute.
00:00
This is actually Nautilus as well.
00:00
That's the File Manager that we're using here.
00:00
If we move or windows around here,
00:00
the Windows Manager is actually called Metacity.
00:00
That does some nice transparency
00:00
when you move files around or move windows around.
00:00
Then that's pretty much it for unity as well.
00:00
Again, display managers like DM,
00:00
the File Manager is
00:00
not always the Windows Manager is Metacity.
00:00
Then that's really pretty much it
00:00
for working with all
00:00
of these different display environments.
00:00
To lock the screen, we can just hit
00:00
Control Alt L or we can select lock right here.
00:00
But with that, we've reached the end of this lesson.
00:00
In this lesson, we covered
00:00
the purpose of a desktop environment.
00:00
We talked about how to differentiate between
00:00
the environments and the differences between them.
00:00
Then we also saw how to log in and
00:00
navigate the various desktop environments.
00:00
Thanks so much for being here and I look
00:00
forward to seeing you in the next lesson.
