The Performing a Check for Open Ports module provides you with the instructions and devices to develop your hands-on skill in the following topics.

  • Identifying open ports by performing SYN scan using Nmap and Hping3

Lab time: It will take approximately 20 minutes to complete this lab.

The following objectives are covered in this lab.

  • Scanning networks

Exercise 1 - Identifying Open Ports

A port is a place where information goes into and out of a computer. Port Scanning is a process of systematically scanning a computer’s ports to determine open ports. Each open port is an open door to a computer. Any service that requires data to be transmitted into and out of a computer will use a port to do so. For example, the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) uses port number 21 for file transfer.

In this exercise, you will learn to determine open ports using Nmap and Hping3.
