Video Description

VLAN Configuration Lab Now that we've discussed what VLANS are, we use this lesson for several demonstrations on how to create VLANS and correctly configure them. We'll also discuss the importance of how to use the VLAN Database to test creation and removal of VLANS, and what the VLAN.dat file is, what can happen using, and benefit is of knowing how to use in the administration.

00:04
Okay, folks, I'm going to show you now how to create violence that we discussed. And I'm going to say a few more things about villains.
00:13
So I'm going to go to switch one hair and click on it.
00:17
I'm gonna maximize the window.
00:20
Now I'm inside of switch one.
00:24
And
00:26
let's look at our villain database
00:28
as it stands right now. So I'm gonna execute the command show
00:34
villain
00:35
show villain.
00:38
So when I pull up the command,
00:43
you see
00:44
that you have the villain
00:46
I d.
00:48
So, Dylan, once there by default, as I said, we land one is the default villain.
00:53
Well, and one or 2103104 and 105
01:00
are also there by default, and these cannot be deleted.
01:04
You also see that port one to port 24 Fast Internet. FAA stands for fast Internet
01:12
one through fast Internet 24.
01:18
The long
01:19
fasten. It isn't at one through fast within a 24 and gigabit Ethernet one and two which is 1000 megabits per second. All belong by default to villain one where my cursor is
01:32
we and one or 234 and five have no ports in front of times a day. Do not support any ports at this point
01:40
Now, I did the command short villain. You see this extra stuff that we don't need? Four C c N a.
01:46
All this stuff till the bottom. We don't need this. We don't need the highlighted stuff. Farsi, CNN. So if you execute the command show villain brief,
01:56
it gives you a nice cleaner output. And it just takes away that extra stuff stuff at the bottom that you don't really need for your ccn anyways.
02:06
Now let's go ahead and create Villain 100 using the old method.
02:10
So
02:13
we just simply type in the word re lan.
02:16
And then if I hit question Mark, it asks me to type in database
02:23
and then have hit question mark again.
02:27
It says, Hit the control key. I mean, the carriage return.
02:30
So
02:31
I hit enter. And now you see my change from just switch and pound sign
02:38
to switch villain pound sign, which means now I'm ready to configure the saline databases.
02:44
Now, when you hit, enter
02:46
when you say villain database and you hit enter,
02:49
you'll get a warning.
02:51
This warning is basically saying that it is recommended that you create your villains using the new method because the old method will be deprecating or taken away in future editions of the
03:01
operating system.
03:04
Now, I've been seeing this message for the last six or seven years, so they haven't taken it away yet.
03:08
Hence, I'd like to teach the old method regardless of whether it's part of CNN or not.
03:15
Now, while in villain database mood, I'm gonna type in villain 100. So villain space question mark. It asked me to pick a villain between one and 1005 which is our normal range.
03:28
So let's take 100.
03:30
And then if I say space question mark, you see that it is asking me
03:36
to name the Veena now. I don't necessarily have to name the villain. I could just hit Enter at this point, and it will create Villain 100. But let's go ahead and the name it anyways, name
03:47
test
03:50
and I hit. Enter
03:52
and you see the logging message. It said villain 100 has been added with name test.
03:59
Now exit out off my villain database mode
04:04
and let's look at our villain database again with the command show Villain Brief.
04:15
Now you see that villain 100 has been created with the name test
04:19
and it is active, but still it has no ports assigned to it.
04:26
We will get to that later on in the day.
04:29
Hopefully.
04:31
Now, if I wanted to get rid of the 9 100
04:35
again
04:36
villain
04:42
database, go back into the land database mode
04:45
and I can use the up arrow key to scroll through my commands.
04:48
So villain 100 name test. That's how we created it.
04:54
Simply add a no in front of Bill and 100 name test
05:00
and this stays. This command is not supported by a packet tracer. So we will use another method to get rid of Ian and 100 in a minute.
05:10
Let's move on to
05:12
the new way
05:14
off creating villains. So for that, I need to get into my contract mode. And don't worry about the command to get into config mo just yet. I will go over it in a little bit,
05:26
and now we are in conflict mode. The reason being are prompt has changed and it actually say's switch conferred
05:34
over here. If I type in the command villain.
05:38
Let's create Real and 200 nice even number
05:41
Leland 200.
05:43
At this point. Since I'm doing it from CONFIG mode and this is the new way of doing it,
05:47
I do not assign it a name
05:50
on the same line I actually hit. Enter
05:55
and I change modes to configure villain mode, which basically means I'm I'm in the mood where I can modify my villain database
06:03
over here. I can name it its name it
06:08
Francisco. Why not?
06:11
And I hit Enter
06:14
and best practice in this case is to first exit out of this mode
06:18
back to config mode. So the command exit takes you back one mode.
06:24
And then, since we're in config mode, we can we can execute the command show villain brief, except we just have to put the word do in front of it. Do show Leland brief.
06:41
If I hit enter,
06:43
you see that I have now created
06:46
the villain 200 with named Cisco. Once again, no ports assigned to that be land yet
06:55
now
06:56
V nans are stored on a Cisco switch
07:01
in flash memory
07:03
in a file called villain dot dat.
07:08
So let's look at the contents off our flash memory
07:19
show Flash. Simple enough.
07:23
And you guys see this file
07:25
Wieland aut that
07:28
That's the file. Your villain 100 Leland 200 are stored them.
07:34
Now, I'm gonna show you how to delete these villains real quick.
07:39
I'm back in Macon fig mode
07:42
and
07:43
a simple rule of thumb to follow it. Cisco, which holds true 99% of the time and the few exceptions to the rule, I'm about to tell you I will show you the exceptions.
07:54
However, the rule of thumb
07:57
in Cisco to negate a command or to do the opposite off a specified command is simply to put the word no in front of it. So when we created the land 100
08:09
we said Villain 100 from config mode.
08:13
If I go ahead and put the command knew in front off it, that gets rid of the land 100.
08:20
Then I use my up arrow key to pull up no villain. 100 again.
08:24
I changed the 100 to 200 get rid of Villain 200.
08:28
Now, if we look at our
08:31
villain database, do show
08:35
villain briefed
08:39
you will see that bill and 102 100 are missing.
08:46
So that takes care of how to create villains and how to delete the lands.
08:50
Now in my head, I hear a question. Can you get rid of all the villains by getting rid
08:56
off this villain dot That file that we had in flash?
09:00
Sure you can.
09:01
So let's go ahead and create Villain 102 100 again. So I will say Villain 100. And then just from this mood, I can go ahead and save the land 200 it will create the land 200
09:15
automatically.
09:16
I say exit. And then look at my
09:20
Wieland database. Do show Dillon
09:24
Brief
09:24
and Dylan 102 100 back.
09:30
Now. If I wanted to get rid of the villain dot dat file,
09:35
I go back. One mood
09:37
and the command is
09:39
Deal it,
09:41
Leland
09:43
or I could say delete flash
09:50
colon villain dot that
09:54
now I avoid saying delete, flash the land out that because if you forget to
10:01
if you forget to type envy, land out that then you are going to delete flash
10:07
and another one of these things that sits in the operating system. Let me show you
10:13
another one of these things that sits in the flash memory. I mean to say,
10:20
is this been filed that you guys see that I'm highlighting? This is your operating system. So, God forbid, by accident you delete the contents of flash.
10:30
It is just one command. You can delete your operating system.
10:35
So instead of doing the command and I'm just screwing using the up arrow key,
10:45
Okay, maybe it's not there. Instead of saying, delete Flash Colin villain dot That and then hitting Enter, I will simply say
10:54
delete
10:56
flash. No, I will simply say delete villain dot That
11:01
and hit Enter
11:03
and it will ask me Delete file. Lame villain dot debt I hit. Enter again and confirm it and hit. Enter.
11:09
Then I go look at my villa and database show Leland
11:13
Breathe
11:16
and Dylan 102 100 should be gone.
11:22
Well, actually, villain, 102 100 are sitting in our
11:28
running configuration, so I have to power cycle this router. I mean, this switch to get rid of him.
11:35
So we're gonna go ahead and power cycle this switch
11:45
waiting for it. Sure Dylan
11:50
brief and villain. 102 100 are done.
11:54
Now
11:58
there is a caveat here with this command that can cause an RPG in our world. RP is a resume producing event, which means you got fired. And now you need to produce your resume again.
12:11
If I execute the command delete villain. Got that
12:16
and I hit. Enter again. This this little tidbit is not part of the CNN, but it might help you at some point.
12:22
And now it says it's asking me to leave file in Freeland. Got that?
12:26
Some people at this point have a tendency to type in the word the letter. Why? For yes,
12:33
it is asking me delete villain dot that question mark, which means it wants me to just get entered to confirm.
12:43
But I went ahead and type in. Why? Anyways,
12:46
if I hit enter
12:48
look at what it comes back with.
12:50
It comes back with delete Flash Colon.
12:54
If at this point I am not paying attention,
12:58
I will delete all flash, which means my operating system is gone. At this point,
13:05
I will break out if it using control, See, because I don't want
13:09
to delete my flash.
13:11
But be aware of this issue. Never say yes or no at the end of these prompts, unless it's asks you to say yes or no if it's just a question mark or the word confirmed just hit enter. At that point,
13:26
this concludes
13:28
the section of the class that deals with creating and deleting villains.
