vSphere Update Manager (lab 1) - Update the VIC This lab-based class covers working with the vSphere update manager. Participants learn step by step instructions in how to launch the installer to update the VIC so there can be an interface with update functions. The update manager is useful in keeping a system update in the latest patches. Participants also learn how to set a baseline as well as remediation steps.

Hello and welcome to lab number 22 where we'll be working with evey Sphere update Manager.
00:11
First thing I need to do is find a 64 bit 2008 server
00:17
to install the software,
00:20
and I'm going to go ahead. I'm editing the settings
00:24
for the 64 bit 2008 server,
00:27
and I'm gonna pointed to the
00:30
the 5.5 update to
00:33
install Media, which is in the form of a nice O phile.
00:37
Make sure that's connected the power on.
00:40
Go ahead and click. Okay,
00:43
it will boot this server.
00:50
You might be able to install it on another server in your infrastructure. That's
00:55
come
00:56
more modern than 2008.
00:58
But this just happened to be available as a handy server to use. So we're gonna go ahead and do that.
01:07
Just make sure you're aware of the 64 bit requirement.
01:15
Okay, so we'll go ahead and get logged in.
01:36
Also, if you have the center
01:38
installed as an application on another server,
01:42
you can install update manager on that same view center
01:48
instance
01:49
for these labs we've been using the V Center server appliance,
01:53
which actually runs on on a Linux operating system, so we have to
01:57
installs us in a separate machine.
02:01
So open up Windows Explorer
02:13
and we'll go ahead and launch our installer.
02:15
And here we have the update Manager
02:17
Cem Prerequisites that tells you the
02:21
that you can use an embedded database or you can use external database
02:25
such as Oracle
02:28
for our purposes. And invented database is fine because you have a very small environment.
02:34
So we'll go ahead and get the installation started
02:47
checking my system
02:52
to make sure I've got some of the needed components, like c++
02:57
2005.
03:00
So it does require some other components to operate.
03:05
Go ahead and accept the license agreement,
03:07
and you have the option to install
03:10
updates and download updates immediately after installation. So we'll leave that selected.
03:15
Now I need to provide the I P address of my
03:20
the center server, which is
03:22
Stop 1 20
03:23
I also need
03:28
I also need the administrator log in,
03:43
and since I don't have an existing database, I'll just install a new sequel express
03:47
database.
03:53
So go ahead and order, right that my system here is that 1 44 so I'll make a note of that.
03:59
I'm not using a proxy
04:01
so I can skip those settings. I'll pick the
04:04
default installation folders
04:08
tells me I have less than 101 120 gig.
04:11
I think I have about 32 gig freeze. That should be enough for my purposes.
04:15
Well, go ahead and get the install started.
04:20
Installation does take a little while to run,
04:25
so I will
04:27
pause here and come back when this is completed.
04:33
All right? The install is finished,
04:36
so we'll go ahead and click that
04:44
and exit an installer.
04:46
And you do have to reboot your
04:48
your server once this is done,
04:54
so we'll restart our V m.
04:57
The reason is installed Update manager.
05:05
All right, well, that's rebooting.
05:10
I can go back to my
05:12
vic client,
05:14
and now I need to install the plug in in order for
05:18
the center
05:20
to interface with
05:23
this update manager.
05:25
So go to plug ins at the top menu, manage plug ins,
05:29
and you'll notice that
05:31
there should be an available plug in
05:35
for the update manager.
05:38
So I'll download and install this.
05:51
So the update manager client is now installing
05:57
for a version 5.5 update to
06:00
except the license agreement
06:05
and I'll go ahead and
06:08
do the installation.
06:13
So this will update my my vic so that I can interface with update manager function.
06:25
The FDA manager is very useful.
06:28
Fort
06:29
keeping your hosts
06:31
outfitted with latest patches.
06:34
And we'll see how that works
06:36
once we start creating a
06:40
a baseline getting it attached and doing the remediation steps
07:02
still installing.
07:10
Okay, the installation is now finished,
07:14
so we can go ahead and
07:15
close this window.
07:20
We do get our certificate warning
07:23
from 1 44 which is the new update managers system so we can install
07:28
certificate and ignore the warning.
07:31
Now we see that the PLUGIN has enabled status,
07:35
so we'll go ahead and close the window.
07:40
Now we need to modify the settings for a cluster,
07:45
so select the cluster right click at its settings.
07:53
A J was disabled there.
07:55
Um,
07:57
first thing hold you is
08:00
select fully automated for Avi Sphere. DRS.
08:07
That way we know that
08:09
the V EMS will be migrated to other notes in the cluster as needed automatically.
08:16
First, we're gonna leave our
08:18
migration threshold where it is for right now.
08:26
And then
08:26
we're gonna select V's fear h a
08:30
and we're going to
08:33
disable
08:33
the power on operations that violate availability constraints.
08:41
So this allows us
08:43
to power on V EMS
08:46
that
08:46
that wouldn't otherwise be powered down due to
08:50
availability restrictions based on rules or other resource requirements. We have a little bit more flexibility
08:56
with how the cluster will
08:58
operate,
09:01
so we'll go ahead and click. Okay,
09:09
now we have this cluster selected, so we'll also go to a resource allocation tab.
09:15
And we want to make sure that we don't have
09:18
any reservations assigned to virtual machines. All these air set to zero. So that's
09:22
what we're looking for there.
