Overview

Introduction

The Design and Create MDX Calculations module provides you with the instructions and devices to develop hands on skills in the following topics:

  • Creating query-scoped calculated members in MDX
  • Creating session-scoped calculated members in MDX

Exercise 1 - Creating Query-Scoped Calculated Members in MDX Statement

A calculated member is a member of a dimension or a measure group. You can define a calculated member by combining cube data, arithmetic operators, and functions. SSAS stores the definitions of calculated members in cubes and calculates their values at query time. You can also define calculated members in an MDX expression. When you create a calculated member as part of an MDX query whose scope is limited to the query, you use the WITH keyword. A query scoped calculated member no longer exists after the query has finished running.

Exercise 2 - Creating Session-Scoped Calculated Member in MDX Statement

To create a calculated member that is available throughout a Multidimensional Expressions (MDX) session, you can use the CREATE MEMBER statement. A calculated member that is created by using the CREATE MEMBER statement will be removed only after the MDX session ends. Also, you can use the SCOPE statement to control the context of an MDX query to specific member of the cube.
