In this lesson we'll be covering

architecture and operating systems.

Now this will be a technical focus lesson,

which if you have a technical background,

should be quite simple for you.

If you don't, don't worry too much,

as long as you can obtain a good understanding or

at least a high level understanding of this,

then you should be fine for

anything that the exam will throw at you.

Let's begin. Basically in

modern computing systems or

modern hardware and software,

architecture will consist of a number of
00:00
layers of circuitry and logic.

These are arranged in
00:00
hierarchical structure that will
00:00
interact with the operating system,
00:00
which we'll cover in our next lesson.

Just to give you a bit of an overview.

We have operating system and applications.
00:00
This is system software which enables
00:00
the management and operation of applications software.
00:00
This is the stuff that the user interacts with basically.

In the next level we have the kernel
00:00
and so this is related to
00:00
basic processes of the operating system
00:00
and interaction with the layer below.

There's some user interaction here,
00:00
but it is very highly restricted.

Then the last level we have is firmware.

This is the management of the hardware
00:00
or the interaction between the kernel,
00:00
the operating system, and the hardware itself.

At this stage there's really little

to no end user involvement.

This all happens very much under the surface.
