>> Now we're going to be talking about
00:00
Community Cloud deployments.
00:00
We're going to talk about those
00:00
>> key characteristics that
00:00
>> differentiate the community clouds from
00:00
the other deployment models we've discussed.
00:00
Why would an organization
00:00
>> want to use a Community Cloud?
00:00
>> What's the business justification
00:00
for use of Community Cloud?
00:00
Then what are the benefits and
00:00
limitations of the community cloud?
00:00
I really think this is an
00:00
interesting cloud deployment model,
00:00
and I hope you agree.
00:00
In the Community Cloud,
00:00
one affiliated group of
00:00
organizations is really sharing Cloud infrastructure.
00:00
In most cases that underlying infrastructure is also
00:00
owned and administered by that affiliated group.
00:00
Now, this was all in disperse administration.
00:00
There isn't always one Cloud provider
00:00
administering all of the underlying
00:00
Cloud infrastructure,
00:00
each group is maintaining potentially it's
00:00
piece of the Cloud infrastructure
00:00
or application and other members
00:00
of this group get to share and utilize these resources.
00:00
You might be asking, well, how does this happen?
00:00
How do I get to be part of the community?
00:00
Well, that's exactly how the Community Cloud is set up,
00:00
it's typically a group
00:00
or organization or set
00:00
of companies that work together in tandem,
00:00
such as there are research organizations that
00:00
coordinate and shared data or
00:00
applications together in a Community Cloud.
00:00
There are some instances where
00:00
private Cloud providers provide
00:00
a Community Cloud service.
00:00
One of the examples of this is like AWS
00:00
provides a federal Cloud,
00:00
and this is
00:00
a big business opportunity in Community Cloud.
00:00
For example, in 2020,
00:00
the US government granted a contract to
00:00
Microsoft to host their government Cloud.
00:00
That contract was worth cool $10 billion.
00:00
Now, you might say, "Wait,
00:00
why is the government using analyzing
00:00
and Community Cloud?"
00:00
Well, one of the advantages is in
00:00
terms of security and compliance.
00:00
With all the organizations
00:00
using the Cloud sharings, remember,
00:00
the same regulatory compliance obligations,
00:00
there could be standardization
00:00
across the community cloud.
00:00
As we've seen in the other Cloud models,
00:00
that reliance and regulatory burden
00:00
could be very different depending
00:00
on who's using the Cloud,
00:00
their business model, but in the community club,
00:00
because most of the organizations
00:00
share the same exact mission,
00:00
there could be standardization
00:00
of those controls which grants
00:00
a higher level of security and
00:00
compliance within the Cloud environment.
00:00
You really see this in that FedRAMP for example.
00:00
We'll go into what FedRAMP is,
00:00
but it's a standard for maintaining
00:00
Federal Information Security based cloud systems.
00:00
It was applied across both,
00:00
I guess, Amazon and Microsoft.
00:00
Government Cloud both have this and were battling it
00:00
out to see who was going to get
00:00
this $10 billion contract.
00:00
Typically, the cost of the community Cloud
00:00
is lower because all of these organizations are
00:00
sharing and sharing alike and they are bearing
00:00
the cost of administering the Cloud and its resources.
00:00
But overall, the main characteristic,
00:00
common set of organizations that have
00:00
a common mission or say
00:00
underlying security concerns share in
00:00
the administrative costs of maintaining
00:00
the Cloud or they engage a provider who
00:00
provides the Cloud only
00:00
to a distinct set of organizations
00:00
that have a common goal or affiliation in mind.
00:00
Quiz question. Which of the following is
00:00
the most significant difference between
00:00
community Cloud and public Cloud deployments?
00:00
Is it shared costs,
00:00
shared services, or organizational affiliation?
00:00
If you said organizational
00:00
affiliation and you'd be correct.
00:00
That's really the common denominator
00:00
among how community clouds work.
00:00
As a shared mission or connection among
00:00
the organizations that participate
00:00
in the community Cloud.
00:00
All right, in this module, we talked about
00:00
the characteristics of the community cloud,
00:00
as well as the business case
00:00
for using the community Cloud.
00:00
We've talked about the example of
00:00
federal government agencies utilizing
00:00
secure community Cloud because of
00:00
their very high need for
00:00
security and compliance adherence in the Cloud.
00:00
All right, I'll see you in the next module.
