The Using Productivity Software - OpenOffice and Windows Live Mail module provides you with the instruction and devices to develop your hands on skills in the defined topics.
You will install and be familiar with the common functions of productivity software like word processing, spreadsheet, email and basic database
This module includes the following exercises:

- Working with .docx, xlsx and .pptx files

- IC3-GS5: Key Applications, Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Presentations, Databases, Graphic Modification.
- IC3-GS5: Living Online, Email Clients.
Exercise 1 - Install OpenOffice
In this exercise, you will install OpenOffice. This is a suite of office programs made by the open source community that rivals commercial Microsoft Office application. OpenOffice is composed of Write, Calc, Impress and Base applications. You will get to use these programs in the later exercise and know some of its basic features.
This lab will only show the basic functionality of these user applications, it is not designed to give you an in-depth knowledge. You can do additional readings on how to use these programs.
Exercise 2 - Using Spreadsheet Software
In this exercise, you will use OpenOffice Calc. This is an alternative program for spreadsheet applications that you can use for making calculations and creating charts/graphs.
Exercise 3 - Using Presentation Software
In this exercise, you will use OpenOffice Impress software and create a simple presentation file.
Exercise 4 - Using Email Software
In this exercise, you will configure Windows Live Mail to collect e-mail from a simulated third party email service. Please note that the lab devices may not have connectivity to free e-mail services like Gmail.com, Outlook.com (formerly Hotmail.com) amongst others because of network security policy.
Exercise 5 - Using Database Software
In this exercise, you will create a sample database using OpenOffice Base. A database is collection of records that can be manipulated or queried by a user to extract required information.
Exercise 6 - Working with docx, xlsx and pptx files
The Apache OpenOffice you installed earlier has support for reading files created in Microsoft Office suite of applications like Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Files created in this application can be viewed only in OpenOffice. If you wish to save the changes made to the files, you will need to save the files in ODF (Open Document Format).
In this exercise, you will work with files created in Microsoft Office 2013.
