Introduction

The Partitions and Storage Modes in SSAS module provides you with the instructions and devices to develop hands on skills in the following topics:

  • Creating Partitions
  • Configuring storage modes in SSAS

Exercise 1 - Creating Partitions

SSAS uses partitions to manage and store cube data and aggregations. There is at least one partition by default created for a measure group in a cube. When you define the measure group for a cube, the SSAS automatically creates a partition for that group.

When you have large cubes, partitioning the cube data will make the SSAS to process only a subset of the data that matches the current information added to the cube. Processing smaller amounts of data will decrease processing time thereby improving the processing performance.
