The Managing Operators module provides you with the instructions and devices to develop your hands-on skills in the following topic.
- Working with alerts and operators
Lab time: It will take approximately 30 minutes to complete this lab.
Two exam objectives are covered in this lab.
- Create an operator
- Assign alerts to the operator
Exercise 1 - Working with Alerts and Operators
You can define alerts in SQL Server. The alerts respond to different types of events such as Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) events, SQL Server events, and database performance status. In other words, alerts are automated responses defined for events. The status of the events generated is recorded in Microsoft Windows application log. SQL Server Agent reads the application log. It compares the status of the events with the alerts defined. On finding a match between the event and alert, SQL Server Agent executes the alert.
When you define an alert, you need to provide a unique name for the alert not exceeding 128 characters, the event against which the alert will be fired, and the action SQL Server Agent will take on the execution of the alert.
When the alerts are fired, electronic notifications can be sent to people or groups. You can create operators in SQL Server that are considered as aliases for people or groups who receive such notifications. While defining a new operator, you must provide a unique name for the operator not exceeding 128 characters. You must also specify the notification mode for the operator. There are three notification modes available for the operators. These are as follows:
- E-mail: In this mode, you must specify the e-mail address of the operator and the operator will be notified through an e-mail message.
- Pager: In this mode, you must specify the e-mail address of the operator and the operator will receive pager messages.
- Net send: In this mode, notification to the operator is sent through the net send command.
In this exercise, you will perform the following tasks:
- Create a new alert.
- Create a new operator and assign the newly created alert to the operator.
