Exercise 1 - Prepare System Requirements for Failover Clustering
A failover cluster is a group of independent computers that work together to enhance the availability of applications and services. Failover clusters provide fault tolerance/high availability of network services. If one of the nodes in the cluster fails, the other node takes over and begins to provide the service—a process known as failover.
The failover clusters are actively monitored to verify that the nodes are working properly. If a node is not working, it is restarted or moved to another node. Failover clusters provide a Clustered Shared Volume or CSV functionality that provides a distributed namespace that clustered roles can use to access shared storage from all nodes of the cluster. By using Failover Clustering, users experience minimal downtime in accessing network services.
In this exercise, you will set up the system requirements to successfully create a failover cluster to provide fault tolerance to Hyper-V services.
Exercise 2 - Install and Configure Failover Clustering
Installation of Failover Clustering can be done either in graphical user interface (GUI-based) program like Server Manager or through the command line via Windows PowerShell.
In this exercise, you will install failover clustering then set up the configuration of this service to provide high availability to server-based applications.
Exercise 3 - Install Virtual Machine Role on Failover Cluster
Failover Clustering provides fault tolerance for mission-critical network services in Windows like File Server, Hyper-V and among others. In this exercise, you will install a role that will be integrated into failover clustering which will provide high availability for virtual machines in Hyper-V service.
Exercise 4 - Manage Failover Clustering
In this exercise, you will test the high availability of Hyper-V Virtual Machine service using Failover Clustering. You can adjust the failover, failback and preferred owner settings to control the way the failover cluster responds when an application or a network service stops.
