Overview

Introduction

Welcome to the Manage Operating System Tools Practice Lab. In this module, you will be provided with the instructions and devices needed to develop your hands-on skills.

Learning Outcomes

In this module, you will complete the following exercises:

  • Exercise 1. Install and Configure Printers
  • Exercise 2. Implement Disk Partitions
  • Exercise 3. Manage Unresponsive Applications

After completing this lab, you will be able to:

  • Add and share a printer
  • Connect to a shared printer
  • Create and format partitions
  • Create an extended volume
  • Convert basic disk to dynamic disk
  • Download a tool to illustrate application hangs
  • Use Task Manager to end a process
  • View application log in Event Viewer

Exam Objectives

The following exam objective is covered in this lab:

  • 3.1 Manage applications and software

Lab Duration

It will take approximately 1 hour to complete this lab.

Exercise 1 - Install and Configure Printers

Companies and organizations tend to share printers in a corporate network in order to maximize their investment on the expensive equipment. To share the device throughout the corporate network, they use Windows operating systems (including Windows clients) to function as a print server by sharing the printer installed on the server or workstation.

The shared printer is readily available for other computers as Windows automatically assigns permissions for the resource. However, there will be instances where a separate download for a printer driver will be required if a newer printer model is installed on the print server.

In this exercise, you will install and share a printer on a Windows server, and a client will connect to the device.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this exercise, you will be able to:

Add and share a printer

Connect to a shared printer

Exercise 2 - Implement Disk Partitions

Disk partitions or disk volumes are logical segments on a physical hard disk. The operating system considers each partition as a separate entity, as data such as operating system support files and applications can be stored on different partitions.

Disk Management in Windows 10 is one of the Graphical User Interface (GUI) tools for managing disks and creating partitions on the disks. The disk must have unallocated or free space to be able to create partitions or volumes.

In this exercise, you will learn to create, delete, and format disk partitions. You will mark one of the partitions as active. You will setup a mirrored array using an existing drive. Finally, you will convert an empty dynamic disk to basic disk using Disk Management.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this exercise, you will be able to:

  • Shrink disk volumes
  • Create and format primary, extended volumes from one physical hard drive

Exercise 3 - Manage Unresponsive Applications

Operating systems have built-in features to terminate applications that have stopped responding to user input. This error will happen if there is an issue with the application, such as missing updates or corrupted files that the application depends on. Insufficient system memory or low disk space are other possible causes as to why an application hangs. This results in the application not responding to user input. Typically, a user can wait it out until the application works or simply restart the application that hanged. Task Manager will display the unresponsive program in the list of active processes where a user can end the task of the said program.

An application crash occurs when the application utilizes a memory address set aside for another process. Windows will close the application and create an entry in the application event log to help diagnose the problem.

In this task, you will use a program called badapp.exe to create the scenario of an application hang and an application crash.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this exercise, you will be able to:

  • Download a tool to illustrate application hangs
  • Use Task Manager to end a process
  • View application log in Event Viewer
