Overview

Introduction

The Maintain Active Directory module provides you with the instruction and server hardware to develop your hands on skills in the defined topics. This module includes the following exercises:

  • Installing Replica Domain Controller
  • Backup Active Directory and SYSVOL
  • Perform Authoritative Restore
  • Cleaning up Active Directory Metadata
  • Creating Active Directory Domain Services Snapshots
  • Enable Active Directory Recycle Bin

Exercise 1 - Installing Replica Domain Controller

For corporate networks that span multiple geographical locations, installing an additional domain controller in other sites facilitates the log on process as Active Directory authentication is processed on the local network.

Installing a replica domain controller can authenticate user, group and computer accounts that attempt to sign on to an Active Directory Domain.

In this exercise, you will perform Backup and Restore of Active Directory.

Exercise 2 - Backup Active Directory and SYSVOL

In this exercise, you will perform the tasks required to backup AD and the SYSVOL.

Exercise 3 - Perform Authoritative Restore

In the next exercise, you will restore an organizational unit and a single AD object using NTDSUTIL.

Exercise 4 - Cleaning up Active Directory Metadata

In this exercise, you will perform a clean-up Active Directory metadata objects. A metadata clean-up is required to forcibly remove an object in a Windows domain following an unsuccessful removal of a domain controller using Add or remove roles and features. If a domain controller goes permanently offline and you have no plans of restoring the computer, metadata clean-up can be used to avoid Active Directory replication errors with a non-existent domain controller.

Exercise 5 - Creating Active Directory Domain Services Snapshots

In this exercise, you will create a snapshot of the current state of your Active Directory. This feature was first introduced in Windows Server 2008 and gives you the capability to take a "picture" of your Directory Service and allows you to view AD database after making changes to it.

Exercise 6 - Enable Active Directory Recycle Bin

In this exercise, you will enable the Active Directory Recycle Bin.
