Welcome to the Configure Disk Types Practice Lab. In this module you will be provided with the instructions and devices needed to develop your hands-on skills.
In this module, you will complete the following exercises:
- Exercise 1 - Create Disk Partitions
- Exercise 2 - Create Virtual Hard Disks
After completing this lab, you will be able to:
- Create storage drive types such as basic, primary, extended, logical, dynamic disk and VHDs
The following exam d are covered in this lab:
- Understand disk types - basic disk, dynamic disk, mount points, file systems, virtual hard disks
It will take approximately 45 minutes to complete this lab.
Exercise 1 - Working with Disk Partitions
Disk partitions or disk volumes are logical segments on a physical hard disk. The operating system considers each partition as a separate entity, and thereby different types of data such as operating system support files and applications can be stored on different partitions.
Disk Management in Windows 10 is a Graphical User Interface (GUI) tool to manage disks and create partitions on the disks. The disk must have unallocated or free space to be able to create partitions or volumes.
In this exercise, you will learn to create, delete, and format disk partitions. You will mark one of the partitions as active. Then create an extended partition Finally, you will convert an empty dynamic disk to basic disk using Disk Management.
Exercise 2 - Create Virtual Hard Disks
A virtual hard disk (VHD) is like a container that can hold multiple files, folders, and volumes. It is portable and can be copied onto a USB drive or in a network. VHD files are denoted by .vhd or .vhdx extension.
VHDs can be associated with virtual machines created in a Windows feature called Hyper-V.
In this exercise, you will learn to create and configure virtual hard disks using Disk Management console.
