Overview

Introduction

The Configure and verify BGP module provides you with the instructions and Cisco hardware to develop your hands on skills in configuring BGP, this module contains the following exercises:

  1. iBGP
  2. Advertising addresses
  3. eBGP and basic route filtering
  4. Manipulating paths

Exercise 1 - iBGP

In this exercise you will learn how to configure basic Internal BGP and see some of the configuration challenges you may face when dealing with this protocol. Please refer to your course material or use your preferred search engine to gain an understanding of these tasks.

Internal BGP

BGP configuration is quite different and can be much more complex than any other routing protocol. Often it is this complexity and the change in mind-set of that can lead to problems with BGP. The route selection process is also quite extensive and can be hard to get to grips with.

BGP however is the most common protocol in use to achieve Internet redundancy as often you will peer with two different service providers and you will need to tune which links you prefer for incoming and outgoing traffic.

Exercise 2 - Advertising addresses

In this exercise you will learn how to configure BGP to advertise addresses and some of the problems you may face.

Advertising networks

There are a number of approaches to advertise networks in BGP, in this next example we’ll cover using the network command and the aggregate-address command. Remember at this stage we are only using iBGP.

Exercise 3 - eBGP and basic route filtering

In this exercise you will learn how to configure basic external BGP.

Exercise 4 - Manipulating paths

In this final exercise you will configure path manipulation using local-preference and weight.

Local-Preference

First we will configure local-preference to influence an outbound path.
