It's hard to administer systems nowadays without security. Managing and administering systems almost always includes a security component, if not an outright security focus.

Are you interested in moving from a systems administration position into a more security-focused role? And, do you want to design your career in information systems?

As an example, consider that many Enterprise Resource Planning Systems (ERP), such as Microsoft Dynamics AX, SAP and Oracle have security functions that enable you to secure business data and the database system. ERP is a trend in the information system field that enable companies to run their business in a the smoothest and fastest ways by integrating all the business functions. These system make it easy for managers and CEO's to make business decisions for the sake of company growth and grow profitable businesses.

Working as an ERP Admin could allow you to gain focus and elevate your status in the IT world.

Let's get started on defining some clear roads for your Infosec career...

First: Earn a Degree and/or Certificates in Information Technology Field

For those of you beginning their post-secondary education and interested in working in information security, your undergraduate studies should concentrate on computer/networking security, computer science or engineering.

Certificates are powerful, too. And, if you already hold a degree, certificates can augment your degree. See below for more on certificates.

Second: Understand Database or Other Systems

As noted in the example above, if you're going to learn one of the notable ERP systems, it's mandatory to know how to secure your application, database and business data.

Select an ERP system and become certified in one of the top ERP applications including Microsoft Dynamics AX, Oracle Business Suite or SAP.

Consider learning other systems with a need for security (there are many these days).

Third: Network with Security Professionals

You can network with people via professional associations, clubs or even online via Facebook or LinkedIn. You don't know when you’ll make a connection who will assist you in developing your Infosec career.

Fourth: Gain Credentials

Gaining credentials is different than education and certification. It's about being a member of a worldwide professional body in information security field.

In my opinion, the best professional body is the Information System Security Association. They have two types of membership: student membership or professional membership. Through either, you'll gain access to discussions, books and professionals in the information security field.

Find your local chapter and go to monthly meet-ups, ask questions and, if you decide to join, become a regular attendee.

Fifth: Achieve Professional Certification

There's a lot of debate about information security certifications. You should determine whether you're a starting your Infosec career or you're mid-career.

CompTIA Security+

If you're going to start your career in information security, you should earn this basic certificate in the security field. It's the easiest certification and the best to understand the main concepts of Security fundamentals in information technology field.

Your next step after having a lot of experience in this field should be in these certifications.

CISSP (Certified Information System Security Professional)

If you're interested in working in security policy, security management, pursue the CISSP certificate.

CISA (Certified Information System Auditor)

If you are interested in auditing the security policies, take a look a this certificate.

CEH (Certified Ethical Hacking)

If you are interested in ethical hacking and penetration testing, investigate this certificate.

These and other certifications will develop your information security skills and make you recognized in your field. Don't go for unnecessary certification, just start planning a wise approach to enhance your Infosec career and start achieving your life's career success story.
