Course Description

The CompTIA Tech+ course is designed to help anyone who is considering a career in technology. The course will provide students with basic IT knowledge that prepares them to pass the CompTIA Tech+ certification exam.

The course introduces students to IT concepts and terminology. The course is structured to follow the six domains that are covered in the corresponding CompTIA exam. These domains include: tech concepts and terminology, infrastructure, applications and software, software development concepts, data and database fundamentals, and security. This course will cover computing devices, as well as peripheral setup. We cover operating systems, software types, and web browser features. The course also discusses different programming languages, data types, and organizational techniques. There is a brief introduction to newer technologies, such as virtualization and cloud computing. This course will also look at how you can connect computers together to form both wired and wireless networks. Finally, the course covers the important topics of creating backups and environmental and security concepts.

What is the CompTIA Tech+ Certification?

The CompTIA Tech+ certification is a beginner level credential that assesses students’ skills in computing basics, software development, IT infrastructure, and databases. This certification targets individuals who want to learn more about the IT world. It’s ideal for anyone who is considering a new career or career change to the IT industry. The Tech+ certification is a stepping stone to more advanced CompTIA certifications including CompTIA A+, and, with specialized experience, CompTIA Network+ and CompTIA Security+.

What Does this CompTIA Tech+ Course Cover?

The CompTIA Tech+ course is designed to serve as preparation for the certification exam.

This course is an introduction to IT terminology, concepts, and basics of computing. It follows the six domains that are covered in the Tech+ certification exam (FC0-U71). Those six domains are:

  • Tech concepts and terminology
  • Infrastructure
  • Applications and software
  • Software development concepts
  • Data and database fundamentals
  • Security

Within those six domains, students will learn the uses of various operating systems, how to navigate different operating systems, and multiple software applications.

Additionally, there will be a brief overview of new technologies, like cloud computing and virtualization. Very basic networking will also be covered, including how to connect wired and wireless computers together. Lastly, the course will cover fundamental topics related to security.

Is the CompTIA Tech+ Certification Worth It?

The CompTIA Tech+ certification is beneficial in a number of ways. First, a broader understanding of IT foundations is always good knowledge for computer users to have, no matter what industry they work in. It’s also a useful tool for professionals who want to decide if a career in IT is the right one for them. The Tech+ certification is the only pre-career credential that helps students determine if they have an aptitude for IT and whether it is a good option for them.

Any IT certification is beneficial for individuals who have a definite plan to get into an IT field. Credentials demonstrate a willingness to learn, competency in the subject matter, and commitment to the industry. It looks good on a resume, something that is important to hiring managers and recruiters.

The Tech+ certification provides students with foundational knowledge that helps prepare them to earn additional, more advanced IT certifications in the future.

How Hard is the CompTIA Tech+ Certification Exam?

The CompTIA Tech+ certification exam tests students’ knowledge of basic IT terminology and concepts. It’s a beginner-level certification, so the exam is fairly straightforward. It doesn’t go in-depth in any one specific area. Rather, it covers the material more broadly. Because this certification is for students who are new to IT, it requires memorization of concepts and minimum skills in application of those concepts.

The Tech+ certification exam has 70 multiple choice questions, for which students will have one hour to complete. There are no prerequisites or previous work experience required to take the exam. Test-takers must score at least 650 out of 900 to pass.
