In this Configure Near Real-Time Metric Alerts IT Pro Challenge, learners will learn how to use the Azure portal and Azure Cloud Shell to create a Linux virtual machine with SSH key files. You will also learn how to create a rule-based metric alert on a virtual machine and use sudo commands to test that the rule works as expected. The skills acquired in this virtual lab are beneficial for people seeking to be a system administrator or cloud engineer.

Overview

For this lab, the scenario is that you are a cloud operations engineer who is responsible for using Cloud Shell and the Azure CLI to create a Linux virtual machine and testing near real-time metric alerts. You will use Azure Monitor to create a rule for which an alert is generated. You will also use Azure Monitor to create and test a virtual machine metric alert to ensure that your rule is working properly.

This lab will help the learner become familiar with the Azure portal, Cloud Shell, and various sudo and ssh commands.

Create a Linux virtual machine

To begin, you will login to the Azure portal and use Cloud Shell to create a new file share. Then you will create a virtual machine in the existing resource group by running the Azure CLI command az vm create. You need to ensure that secure shell (SSH) key files are generated in the cloud drive. To verify your work, you will use the Cloud Shell to use SSH to connect to the virtual machine you just created.

Create a virtual machine metric alert

In Azure Monitor, you will create a rule to send an alert for when a specified threshold is reached.

Azure Monitor is a collection of services designed to help you detect and monitor performance issues, create data visualizations, create alerts, and more.

Test the near real-time metric alert

Now you are going to use a virtual machine to test the metric alert you just created works as you intended.
