Overview

Cybrscore’s Firewall Setup and Configuration lab is intended for students of Intermediate level. The Cybrscore Firewall Setup and Configuration lab teaches students how to set up a pfSense firewall from the command line interface, configure the firewall using a web interface on a Windows machine, and create a firewall rule to enforce the student’s understanding of network traffic management at different levels. Strong managed firewall configuration is key for reducing the network’s attack vector, deterring potential attackers, and providing a robust first line of defense for the network. Properly configured firewalls allow for traffic pattern analysis tracking, malware detection, virus blocking, and real-time notification of attempted network intrusions. It is important to understand the basic steps for proper firewall configuration because networks are always changing, and new firewall rules and configurations may be needed to account for those network changes and allow for maximum protection and optimal network performance. The pfSense firewall software used in this lab is a free and open source firewall that has includes a variety of features and an easy to use interface. Cybrscore’s Firewall Setup and Configuration lab takes most students approximately 1 hour to complete.

In Cybrscore’s Firewall Setup and Configuration lab, students will learn about setting up a firewall from the command line interface. This skill is a key part of the System Administrator work role and builds to the skill in using virtual machines (e.g., Microsoft Hyper-V, VMWare vSphere, Citrix XenDesktop, Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, etc.).

In Cybrscore’s Firewall Setup and Configuration lab, students will learn about configuring a firewall using a web interface. This skill is a key part of the System Administrator work role and builds to the skill in configuring and utilizing software-based computer protection tools (e.g., software firewalls, antivirus software, anti-spyware).

In Cybrscore’s Firewall Setup and Configuration lab, students will learn about creating a firewall rule to manage network traffic. This skill is a key part of the System Administrator work role and builds to the ability to provide ongoing network optimization and the ability to manage system/server resources including performance, capacity, availability, serviceability, and recoverability.

CybrScore’s Firewall Setup and Configuration lab is part of the System Administrator career path. Completion of the Firewall Setup and Configuration lab means that the student has demonstrated the ability to set up a firewall from the command line interface, configure a firewall from a web interface, and learned how to create a firewall rule to manage network traffic at different levels.
