Employees need foundational guidance on how to use approved AI tools responsibly. Managers need help understanding when they can move forward and when they need review. Council members need deeper training on governance responsibilities, use-case evaluation, data handling, and oversight standards.

This is also where the council becomes more than a compliance mechanism. It becomes part of how the organization builds AI readiness.

When people receive the right training, governance becomes easier. Review conversations improve. Policies become easier to apply. Employees develop better judgment. Leaders gain confidence that adoption is happening in a more controlled and measurable way.

That is one of the clearest signs of a healthy AI program: the organization is not just restricting risk. It is building competence.

Set a cadence that keeps the council operational

Measure whether the council is helping

An AI council should make the organization more capable, not just more cautious.

That means it needs metrics. The best measures are practical. 

  • How many AI use cases are being submitted? 
  • How quickly are they reviewed? 
  • Where are the most common friction points? 
  • What percentage of employees have completed relevant training? 
  • Which departments are adopting approved AI use cases most effectively? 
  • Are higher-risk use cases receiving earlier review instead of last-minute intervention? 
  • Is the organization getting better at balancing value, speed, and control?

The most important point here is that success should include enablement, not just prevention.

A strong AI council reduces confusion, shortens the path to responsible adoption, improves decision quality, and gives leadership more confidence that AI initiatives are aligned with the business.

If the only thing your council can point to is how many things it stopped, it may not be helping enough.
