Bluetooth operates in the 2.4 GHz frequency spectrum. This allows a maximum data connection speed of 723 Kbps. Bluetooth consumes lower power levels than wireless LAN technologies (802.11x) thus its radio wave is not as strong as the 802.11.

Bluetooth uses peer-to-peer networking, and does not need line of sight between any of the connected devices. Bluetooth also has multiple-connection capability for devices in a point-to-multipoint fashion. Bluetooth is not exclusively used with cell phones and PDAs, other networked devices use it as well. The value of Bluetooth is measured by its network effect of a networked device. The three classifications of Bluetooth:

  1. Class 1, with a range of up to 100m and 100mW of power.
  2. Class 2, its range reaches up to 20m and has 2.5mW of power.
  3. Class 3, the most commonly implemented classification. It has a range of up to 10m and has 1mW of power.
