  1. Classification approach — used for pattern discovery and for large databases that need to be condensed to only a few individual records.
  2. Probabilistic approach — used in planning and control systems, and in applications that involve ambiguity.
  3. Statistical approach — used to construct rules and generalize patterns in the data.
