In today’s technological world, IT and cybersecurity professionals have to acquire and maintain comprehensive networking skills. They must know how to manage modern networking infrastructures with the proper tools, including the complexities of wireless networks. The global demand for networking professionals in the public and private sectors is huge, and career opportunities are abundant.

Getting started in networking requires practitioners to demonstrate a solid foundation of networking knowledge and skills. One of the best ways to prove specific IT skills, like networking, is with professional certifications. Many IT and cybersecurity experts agree that the Network+ certification from CompTIA is one of the first to be obtained.

What is the CompTIA Network+ Certification?

The CompTIA Network+ certification is a vendor-neutral credential that validates one’s skills in establishing, maintaining, and troubleshooting networks relied on by organizations for their daily operations. The Network+ certification covers specific networking skills that cybersecurity professionals need to perform well in today’s networking environments. It is one of the most sought-after and recognized credentials worldwide and is a must for anyone in the IT or cybersecurity industry.

How To Become Network+ Certified

Obtaining the Network+ certification begins with acquiring the knowledge and skills required to successfully pass the certification exam. The skills that are tested on the CompTIA Network+ exam include:

  • Managing and troubleshooting basic network infrastructures.
  • Installing, configuring, and operating both wired and wireless networks.
  • Identifying and explaining common networking ports and protocols.
  • Identifying and troubleshooting connectivity and performance problems.
  • Installing, configuring, and differentiating between common network devices.
  • Describing networking technologies and design principles.
  • Adhering to wiring standards and using the most current networking tools.
  • Operating by using cloud computing and virtualization best practices.
  • Understanding cybersecurity concepts and collaborating with information security professionals.

The CompTIA Network+ certification exam is much like other IT and cybersecurity certification exams. The exam has different types of questions designed to verify that one has the knowledge needed to troubleshoot and solve networking issues, from network infrastructures and operating systems to security and mobile devices.

The official exam for Network+ certification consists of up to 90 questions that are multiple-choice and performance-based. Test-takers have 90 minutes to complete the exam and must score at least 720 (on a 100-900 scale) to pass. The cost of the exam is $338 and is valid for three years.

The newest CompTIA Network+ exam, N10-008, began September 15, 2021, but candidates who have studied for the previous version, N10-007, can take that version until June 2022.

To take the CompTIA Network+ certification exam, candidates do not have to meet any prerequisites. However, it is highly recommended that exam-takers have at least nine months of networking experience (or the equivalent training), as well as the CompTIA A+ certification.

The best way to ensure a passing score is to be well-prepared for the exam.
