Course Description

Virtualization is inevitable. It is everywhere and will remain everywhere for many years to come. This course covers all the important concepts of virtualization with a focus on the important components and features of VMware’s virtualization platform, enough to get you up to speed on this amazing product.

In this course we will begin by defining virtualization, the concept of virtual machines, and introduce VMware vSphere. Next, we will deep dive into vSphere core components: The hypervisor ESXi and the management platform vCenter Server. You will then learn how to manage your virtual machines using the tools available in vSphere including creating templates, cloning a virtual machine, using snapshots, and managing resource consumption of virtual machines. After having understood the core components of vSphere, we will discuss basic network connectivity by introducing Standard Switches with all the important terminology used by VMware. We will also cover ip-based storage and how to configure vSphere to use iSCSI. Next, we will introduce advanced features of vSphere, that is, vMotion, vSphere High Availability and vSphere DRS which will help you make your virtualized data center resilient. Finally, we will summarize all the important concepts you have learned throughout the course, and give you directions on what to do next.

Prerequisites

This course requires you to have a basic level of computer and networking literacy. You should know the hardware components of a computer/server and Layer2/Layer3 networking concepts.

Course Goals

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Carry basic administration tasks in a vSphere environment
  • Configure basic networking and storage in a vSphere environment
  • Manage virtual machines
  • Configure availability and resource load balancing in a vSphere environment
  • What is VMware?

VMware, a subsidiary of Dell Technologies, is a virtualization and cloud computing software provider based in California. VMware performs server virtualization by installing a hypervisor on a physical server, allowing multiple virtual machines to run on one physical server. Because each virtual machine is able to run its own operating system, multiple operating systems can run on one physical server.

What is Involved in this VMware Basic Training?

This VMware basic training course teaches students the fundamentals of virtualization, focusing on the VMware platform. The course begins with the basics of virtualization, virtual machines, and an introduction to VMware vSphere. The next part of the course gets into the core components of vSphere including how to:

    * Create templates * Clone a virtual machine * Use snapshots * Manage resource consumption of virtual machines

The course also covers basic network connectivity with Standard Switches and VMware terminology. The training curriculum doesn’t stop there, it goes on to a deeper dive into the advanced features of vSphere.

Once finished with the course, students should have the skills to carry out key administration tasks, configure fundamental networking and storage, and configure availability and resource load balancing in a vSphere environment. They should also know the basics of managing virtual machines.

This VMware Fundamentals training is a beginner-level course, but students should have basic computer and networking skills and knowledge of the components of a computer and server and Layer2/Layer 3 networking principles. The course is two hours and 58 minutes of total clock time, and students will earn 3 CEU/CPE. Students who complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion.
