Hello and welcome back to I send you one interconnecting Cisco networking devices, Part one.
This episode a one for the Cisco Discovery Protocol Friend Erra Nova, instructor for this course US video went over the concepts of NTP and our configure it on the Cisco Devices.
In this episode, we'll be covering the Cisco Discovery Protocol and also the Link Layer Discovery Protocol.
You said we're gonna cover the Cisco Discovery public. We're going to take a look at it in our lab. And also we're gonna figure out how to configure the Linklater discovered protocol and take a look at it in the lab as well.
But first, what is some information that CDP will not give you? I'll give you a few seconds.
All right, Hopefully you got the NTP status.
I'll show you where you can find the rest of that information.
So he says, go to security protocol. I know you guys should have seen me use it a few times here and there. This is a Siskel proprietary protocol for layer to it was created before the standard for Linklater Discovery protocols there, man. Cisco decided to make their own before they're done.
Once again. It's just probably teary. It doesn't work well in a multi vendor environment
for Cisco Devices work phenomenally.
So have you seen the photo? We have the device I d. Which is the host name at the domain name. I realize now
I messed up the domain name for one of them again, like usual.
Ah. But anyway, it gives you the local interface that that device is connected to on on your local device. And we'll give you the capability of it, whether it a switch, a router, different devices and I'll give you the plant for my i d for it as well. As you see, I have a 29 60 switch
up top for a switch to on a router. One is an 18 41 rounder
and then also gives you the port I D. Of the remote port that is connected to using CT fast. Ethernet 0 24 is the port that the
switched to has it plugged into. And rather one has it plugged in a serial 000 as well.
I'm gonna go ahead and just bring out the party session to show you a couple of the commands again has always so versed will just do show CDP neighbors. It should bring up the same information that we see here
we have switched to on our fast Internet 00
It is a switch on the 29 60 platform and I plugged into the fast Ethernet 0 24 of the switch
and same thing rather one plugged into Sierra zero.
It's a router 80 14 or 18 41 platform and I'm plugged in a serial zero on that remote device.
One thing you can do here if you want to see the I p addresses of those information's gonna CDP neighbors detail. This gives you a ton of detail for each device,
so we'll just start up with switch one right here. We have
24 ports switched the actual full platform.
We have the interface that it is plugged onto on our local ports. We have the port that is connected to on the remote device.
We have the exact IOS software with the release information that that switch is running
advertisement efficient. One thing doesn't good to note. Here is the TTP domain, native villian and duplexes ever useful as well
and same thing with the router. One. We have the I. P. Address this time of what it sets, and we also have the I p version six I p addresses
the platform capabilities, the local and remote ports.
We have the software versions. Vtb domain. It's not said
so. CDP is very useful when figured out what is attached to your devices. And this one is very useful in the exams as well. If I remember correctly
anyway, we're gonna go ahead and move into the Link layer Discovery Protocol. This is the IEEE standard 802.1 a b. Uh, this was created after CDP. This is wonderful because it is the open standards. So it's multi vendor supported.
So what we can actually do? Let's say you're in a multi vendor network where you might have said in that gear,
switches and routers somewhere you might have some ubiquity stuff. You know, you just have multi vendor equipment.
So what we can do on our cisco switches? I'm gonna go and bring up party again.
First thing we're gonna do is we're in naval
all right. So actually, the switch to my switch The router that I have, it does not have LDP enabled for that IOS
a little too old to 29. 60 actually. Don't support l d. P. So I'm gonna go ahead and configure for that
And from there, you have to have enabled on the interfaces. Well, so what I'm gonna do is I'm actually gonna plug in a,
crossover cable between the two switches. I haven't running right now,
and so that way we can enable it on those interfaces. So I'm just gonna go into interface F 0 22
And what we're gonna do is we're gonna unable to transmit,
and we're also going to enable it to receive,
so we'll go ahead and plug in to switch to
All right, so we're gonna switch to configure Terminal where we have to enable it first.
Well, dp run, we're going to cafe is 22. Which is that Portland constant cable transport between the two switches.
We'll give it a few seconds and we'll see if we can do a show command here.
All right, so we're gonna take a look at show CDP neighbors real quick.
So we do see the switch one.
And we're on remote fort phase over 22. So it's good.
So let's take a look at the show. L o d P here.
So we have active. So what? Marriage isn't able this time,
So let's go take a look at Show L L D P.
here, we have switched one local interface 22
So if we also go in and we do details,
basically the same amount of information as that's the CDP as well. So we're IOS version.
Um, the capabilities of the physical media. Auto negotiation is supported.
you know, So it doesn't say native land. One just has told you a TV line that you're currently on,
and so the virus is a similar. They're very good. The LDP is gonna work well in a multi vendor partner, environments where CDP works just fine and a cisco environment.
So again, we went over a CD. Pierre, the Cisco Discovery Protocol. We looked at how it's already enabled a Cisco Devices how it works in between the devices. And we looked at L. A DP and enable that are two switches. And we looked at how to what? The difference is in between the CBP and I will deep eating to be in that it's not a whole lot of difference and what I can actually show you.
So why would someone use L A d p over CDP? I'll give you a few seconds to think about it.
All right? Hopefully you got it works well in the multi vendor environments.
Uh, and no, just because it is newer does not mean that it is better. That is not true.
