Personally Identifiable Information

This module covers the following topics:

  • What is PII?

PII is information that can be used to personally identify someone; some, such as someone’s high school mascot, may not be readily identifiable as PII; it can be illegally used to access someone’s sensitive information such as bank account recovery information.

  • What does the law say about PII?

There are national (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and international (Credit Card Industry Data Security Standards and the EU Data Directive) standards that govern data security including PII.

  • How is PII compromised?
  • Social engineering

This is the act of manipulating people for malicious means. This is one of the primary ways that PII can be compromised.

  • Best practices

Follow company policy, defer questions to authority, authenticate according to policy rules, never leave PII unprotected, alert authorities if you expect a security breach of PII.
