This lesson offers an overview of the module which focuses on communication management. Communication management is the knowledge area of PMP that focuses on how to plan, manage and control project information. Plan communications management is the process which creates the Communications Management Plan which details how communications are to be prepared, formatted, observed and regulated. Communication has three main components:

Today we will be covering communications. The PMP consist of there are five process groups: initiation, planning, executing, monitoring controlling and closing. It also has ten knowledge areas. Integration, scope, time, cost, quality, human resources, communication, risk, procurement and stakeholder. Amongst the five process groups and ten knowledge areas, there are 47 processes. As you can see, the knowledge areas on the left, the process groups on the top, and the 47 processes are scattered amongst the knowledge areas and process groups. Going over communication, we have one process in planning, one in executing, one in monitoring controlling. this knowledge area focuses on how to plan, manage and control project information. Under planning it is plan communication management, under executing it is manage communications, under monitoring and controlling it is control communications. Under plan communication management, this is the process that creates communications management plan. If you remember from the other knowledge areas, every knowledge area starts off with a plan. In this one, it happens to be communication management plan. This details the communications, they are going to be prepared, formatted, observed and regulated. The inputs for the plan communication processes are project management plan, and stakeholder register. If you remember the project management plan is the binder, which tells you what sub plans which happens to be communication management plan going to be part of that. The stakeholder register is letting you know who is on the project, what their email address is, what their phone numbers are, what their role on the project is. The stakeholder register comes out of the stakeholder knowledge area. The tools, you have communication requirements analysis, communication technology and communication methods. Under communication requirements analysis, you want to assess what kind of communication are required. You don't want to waste everybody's time by having meetings, when none of that is required of that meeting. The stakeholder might want to be, or the sponsor might want to be updated weekly. Under the communications requirements analysis, you are just trying to figure out who needs to know which information, and how often. Communication technology is how you are going to distribute this communication. Is it going to be video teleconferencing, is it going to be via email, reports, minutes, you are trying to determine your methods. There are three main components of communication. You have the sender, you have the message and you have the receiver. You are trying to figure out communication channels so the more people involved, the higher number of communication channels that will exist. The formula is n, meaning how many people times n minus one divided by two. It will make more sense when we draw that on the whiteboard. [/toggle_content]
