This lesson offers an overview of the module which specifically focuses on quality. Quality management is the knowledge area that covers quality concepts and principles used to ensure the projects satisfies the needs of why the project was taken. Quality is the degree to which a set of inherent characteristic fulfill requirements. Quality management consists of three processes:

  • Plan Quality Management

  • Perform Quality Assurance

  • Control Quality

Today we will be covering quality which is the fifth knowledge area within the PMP. There are five process groups. They are initiating, planning, executing, monitoring controlling and closing. There are also ten knowledge areas. Integration, scope, time , cost, quality, human resources, communication, risk, procurement and stakeholder. Within these five process groups and ten knowledge areas, there are total of 47 processes. If you notice, the knowledge areas are down the left, and the process groups are on the top. Within each box, these are how many processes are within the knowledge area and the process groups. Today we are going over quality. There is one process within planning, one within executing, and one in monitoring controlling. Quality management knowledge area that covers quality concepts. Inputs we use to ensure the project satisfies the needs of why the project was taken. Quality is the degree in which a certain inherent characteristic fulfil the requirements. As you can see there are three processes. Plan quality management which is in planning, perform quality assurance which is in execution, and control quality which is in monitoring controlling. Before we get started, I want to go over a couple key people, and what they have contributed to quality. The first person is Edward Deming. His contribution is total control management. The things you should know for the exam is that quality should be planned, and not inspected after project is delivered. You are planning quality. You are going to be proactive, not reactive. He believes in keeping leadership and accountability, and measure and strive for constant improvement. These are three points you have to know for Deming, and knowing that quality is planned, and you are being proactive, you are not being reactive. The next person I would like you to know is Phillip Crosby. He is known for zero defects. So Phil Crosby believes in you do something right initially, you shouldn't have to repeat it. Joseph Duran, came up with fitness for use, his believe is you are going to interview the stakeholder and the sponsor, or the end user and you are going to build your quality, to meet the requirements. Kaizen means constant, or continuous improvement. Which is a Japanese word which means continuous improvement. You are going to have a proactive stance and an ongoing process improvement. Two examples is the CMMI which is the capability, maturity, module improvement and O which is organization, project, material, module. This is a term that you need to be familiar with for the PMP certification. Gold actually a bad thing. The client gives you an expectation and you exceed that expectation. What's bad about that? The bad thing is you met the clients expectation and you continue going which is going to cost the client money. [/toggle_content]
