this march, we're gonna talk about expanding. Resource is in terms of laptops,
So in regular desktop computers we'd have drive bays and the huge cases that we can usually put extra parts in. We want another hard drive. We just put in the hard drive in who want another network card or another sound card.
We could just put in a expansion card slot. We have players room to work. So that ad, that same kind of functionality into laptops where we don't have a lot of space to work and they develop the P C M. C I. A. Standard.
These are basically little credit card type
devices that can perform multiple functions like they could serve in this example. This is serving as
adding a network interface card to your
computer, so this would just slide into a slot on the side of your laptop and provide network connectivity. This is R J 45 jacket. You just played the network here right into that,
or, if you want to have. If you want to add WiFi for some reason you have WiFi or you want upgrade to a different kind of WiFi. You could get those kind of functionalities on a PCMCIA card.
They're also called PC cards, another common name
also very popular because they're hot. Spot Well, so you don't have to.
You don't shut down the computer. Put in, put it back on. So, like
most confusing, we have two PCMCIA slot. So
if you had more than two cards, you want to mess around. You have to keep reviewing a computer. You could take out a card.
Put another car, depend on what kind of functionality
First kind of PC card or PCMCIA card that came out were the parallel PC cards.
They came in two kinds of 16 bit and card bus card buses in the near one,
uh, so it was backwards compatible. So if your laptop had
to card busts lots, you could fit. You could put car but card bus style PC cards in, and you can also put
the old 16 bit type cards in
became in three sizes with type three beings thickest.
The parallel cards were replaced by were known as express cards.
This is still the latest standard for PC cards.
They, uh, were a lot faster. They operate off the USB 2.0 Bus or the PC Express bus, which gave it a sniff, get speed advantage.
But even with the
huge speeds, a huge speed speed advantage that came with the express cards and all the capabilities along with it, he's still have kind of been phased out there, no longer being developed right now. Actually,
you don't see too many
PCs with the many more laptops with the card slots anymore. And this, mainly because a lot of functionality is that those
provided are available in laptops now and with the low cost of parts. A lot of people don't have laptop long enough that they would need to do that kind of upgrade. So the upgrade the part themselves if they could or they by the time they need to go to a newer technology and be time to buy a new laptop. So
I know, for example, I've gotta just top replacements latest laptop, and it has no express card slots in it.
This is what they looked at, looked like

The skinnier one was 34 millimeters and the wider one was 54.
They provide a lot of that same kind of functionality that you saw
Some other common port besides the PCMCIA card slots where the storage card slots for using compact flash or SD cards
very convenient way for getting images off, Say your camera or your immediate player if you use an SD card from memory.
So the earlier versions more had the older technology, so they had compact card slots.
A lot of the near ones now only have SD card slots because that's
that's latest and greatest.
But if you need to be our used one of those other kinds of slots, you can always get a USB based media card reader. Tad that functionality.
So it was. Any functionality that you need to add can still be added through
on extremely USB version.
We also have a lot of the same other ports, like a desktop.
Um, we have e stato, which is external hard drive connectivity,
which operates at 3 to 6 gigabytes per second. So that's really fast if you have a

Just like with desktops, the older laptops might still have some of the older ports, like your PS two for your keyboard and mouse
or a serial poor or FireWire. The near ones, just like the newer Peces, do everything through USB.
They'll have. So they all have LCD screens, but
they all kind of have dual monitor capability built in because they all come with some kind of
output. The output, Whether it be a VJ issue my

More the reason. That's always. Usually there's a lot of people use their laptops appointment projectors for business use.
You could plug it into a TV if it's HD am I

five USB ports on it,
and three of them were USB three.
It's common to have at least two, if not more, there

we can almost like anything in through USB, whether it be a flash drive

So if we do need to get so we have Ah, You get issued a laptop for work,
and so use it a lot at work, and you have a lot of things plugged in like an external mudder. A keyboard mouse. You know, external keyboard melas. You have an external see rahm drive. You have all this stuff plugged in at work.
Well, when you go some when you take it home with you, you don't wanna plug in all those 67 cable. So that's what Port Replicators Air Force support Replicators provide, like a single USB interface
to your laptop. And then you can plug all your
all your various devices into that port Replicator,
so it is very convenient. Maybe you have a port replicator at your home and your office for all your various homes set up. And then you just move your laptop between the two and plug in one cable instead of having a plug everything all over again.
Bill was every functionality from network to us bees available on those port Replicators,
especially things like scanners and printers, that you're not gonna move and
docking stakes Docking stations are a little bit different in that they're usually proprietary, almost always proprietary. So well, the Port Replicator that will work with any computer because we're just plugging USB into the laptop docking stations designed for a specific laptop. So there's most the major vendors in their business class laptops.
They designed docking stations. They'll have a proprietary connection
like the one in this picture. This would happen to me by Del. Where provides the same functions. But instead of using USB
could be a custom pour on the bottom of the laptop and you plug that you'd sit it right on top of here. Snap in and has a unique has its own interface into the
into the docking station.
Well, you see, the pictures still provides the same kind of function, like in this one you're getting 12345 US B's printer, a serial cable. V G A. Yeah, I mean, it's got it's got more options in new PCs, half for things you can plug in
some other things to consider for accessories on laptops is
all laptops have a little. We'll have alot not from the back.
And I'll show you that in a second on on my sample laptop level, knocked in the back where you can put in a lock, so it would be a steel cable.
You're at the steel cable around something that's not gonna move like your desk,
and looking back into the metal part of that metal part will go into a little rectangle that's a back
of the laptop.
Every laptop I've ever seen has this report on it
very handy. It's not. I mean, it's only a secure is what you attach it to, and if someone really wants to take it, they just have to take,
bolt cutters. But
it's about the same kind of security. Get locking your bike up.
That's a deterrent.
And so the other lap some laptops, more business level. Have software tracking systems installed on him
that will help you locate if it gets lost.
Now there's a lot of commercial in free where software out there that you can download on your own. Two to install in laptops kind of like the locate your missing phone type. Perhaps they have,
either, though they don't have phones. A lot of them will do assumes that powers on they will make a connection out on a WiFi it finds or connect to a server that you identify, and then you can log in and see some of these tracking software well, even activate the camera for you, so you can see who's sitting in front of it. Maybe get a snapshot before they
throughout what happened.
A lot of them run in the background so that someone steals and starts that they don't know. They're tracking software running,
so they go connect to the Web, whoever they do. And as soon as they do that, it's going to send something
back to a server.
It's usually a fee that you pay to whichever company kind of like an alarm system alarm system company would have.
So I want to show you a couple examples
of some of this stuff we've just talked about.
So here we go. A laptop. This what happens to be a desktop replacement?
You can tell from the quite large,
so a couple things. So we have. We have a touch pad just to replace the mouse. All laptops, TVs,
all laptop will have some kind of touch pad so you don't need to bring in extra mouths. You can always operate as a standalone unit.
This one happens have an extra accessory where it's got a
fingerprint reader. Biometric here on the front.
I mentioned the PT the PC cards first. So this one is an older laptop, so it actually has
two slots right here, which were to fit P C M C A
cards. This is not expressed. This is P C M C. A
We look at our available ports on the back. So this one we have, we have our network.
We have this one actually has a motor minute.

Uh, this one has to video so we can do VJ or Devi I or even s video
s o. I have a USB port there.

And this one has FireWire right there. That's what the smaller port is.
Then I have two more USB ports on this side right here in here
in the back.
The locking mechanism was talking about earlier
is right there,
right here. You can see there's a little rectangle right there and that's designed to use one of these locking type mechanisms to secure it to a table or to a desk or something that you know is not gonna move.

Then on the end here,
there's a little rectangular part.
So I'd wrap this around something
and then after I found it and bring it through. So now
