Hot Swappable Drives In addition to storage devices, there are what's known as Hot Swappable devices. These are devices which can be changed out while the computer is on and running. USB, Firewires, and eSATA devices are hot swappable drives, you can remove from a computer system without interrupting its operation, BUT you want to do so when the drive is not in use to assure that all its processes have completed and the data is properly saved to it and or the source computer. That means, assure its been properly ejected. In contrast, a non-hot swappable drive requires that the system be shut off before adding/removing the device.
