Hard Disk Drives

Hard Disk Drives

In this lesson we introduce Hard Disk Drives, and examine drive types and hard drives function.

For demonstration purposes we open up a drive and begin looking at its structure and components.  DO NOT THIS on drives in use, exposure to air, dust, and other particles will contaminate it, this is simply to done to help you comprehend how the drive performs its functions.

The HDD is made up of platters, they are staked and coded with a magnetic coating which accept 1’s and 0’s, this is how data is written to the drive.  You’ll see the “spindle” which is what writes the data to the drive in sectors and you’ll also learn how this process is performed.

You’ll also learn the function of other pieces, how you can determine when you are able to have a drive failure or head crash and what preventative actions they should trigger.
