What are the 3 Methods of Six Sigma?

This lesson covers the three major Six Sigma methodologies, specifically, DMAIC. The first step in Six Sigma is project selection and this works in two ways:

  1. Top Down: tied to business policy but it is too broad in scope
  2. Bottom up: certified black belts choose the project but it may not be tied to business corporate concerns and priorities

Six Sigma has three methodologies which are:

  1. DMAIC: data driven and for improving processes
  2. DMADV: Data-driven and focused on product and process improvement and used to create new products and has more LSS
  3. DFSS: For designing or redesigning a product or service from the beginning

All of the methodologies are DMAIC like with a particular point of view in the Lifecycle Development Process. The DMAIC model stands for Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control and is at the core of Six Sigma:

  1. Define: problem or project goals
  2. Measure: the problem and it’s processes
  3. Analyze: the data, root cause analysis
  4. Improve: the process
  5. Control: variability and negative change, sustain the improvements

A second methodology in Six Sigma is the DMADV model. The DMADV model stands for Define-Measure-Analyze-Design-Verify.

  1. Define: problem or project goals
  2. Measure: customer needs and satisfaction
  3. Analyze: The process
  4. Design: a new and better process
  5. Verify: The designs performance and functionality (Testing)

The DMADV is all about creating a new product and reducing variability.

When using Six Sigma, it is important to use the Six Sigma tool box which shows how to properly utilize Six Sigma in a business. Some of these tools are basic while others are more advanced and require a high level of quantitative and qualitative knowledge.

The third methodology in Six Sigma is DFSS. The DFSS model stands for Define for Six Sigma and within this model you Define-Identify-Design-Optimize-Verify (DIDOV).

  • Define: what customer wants
  • Identify: customer and project
  • Design: process that meets customers needs
  • Optimize: process and design
  • Verify: test and validate

DFSS is all about emerging to build products and processes from the beginning. All of the Six Sigma methodologies are highly structured and specific.
