In this lesson, 2.6. We're going to talk about the chip sets, the North Bridge and Southbridge chipsets. I'm your instructor, Bill Price.
OK, in today's lesson, let's look at our objectives were going to talk about thoroughly. The chipsets gonna have, ah, thorough overview of the chip sets, and we're gonna talk about the North Bridge in the South Bridge rolls on the motherboard. So let's go and get started.
So let's start off with a chip, said overview. In early PC motherboards, many chips controlled many functions and devices. There were chips that controlled the hard drive's chips that controlled the sound on the motherboard. Integrated sound. Another chip controlled the serial ports floppy drive.
There was so many single purpose chips controlling many, many things, and as you could look at the image on the right on this older motherboard,
there were many, many chips, and they were single purpose.
So later on, as computers advanced, the idea came about that there could be certain chips that took on many functions and control many tasks. Thus, reducing the number chips on the board and thus the chips that was born.
Now when chips that's first came on the scene, they were in in some cases, still two of these the North Bridge and the South bread chips sense
now. The North Bridge Chip said Interface with the CPU, so it was taken the heavy load of the duties. The North Bridge had a built in memory controller in it and handled the expansion bus speeds fast. Mission critical items were handled by the North Bridge chipset.
Now the Southbridge chips had handled the slower, less intensive duties. Devices such as US be other ports handle were handled by the Southbridge.
Now I see pews change in technology advances. The rose of the North Bridge and the Southbridge chipsets have changed. Also overtime. Now the processor has begin to take Maur duties of the north, both bridge ships. That
and system. Today on Lee, the Southbridge chipset is present on the board while the duties of the North Bridge have been taken over by the CPU of the processor. Now the chips that is very important component of the more the board as it defines the USB capabilities, the ram capacity and many other functions
of the motherboard. It's the chipsets that really determine and control these functions.
So we're gonna look at a diagram how the North Bridge in the Southbridge interact on the motherboard. So as you can look in the middle of this dump, I am this image. Here you see the North Bridge or the memory controller hub on. That's another name for it. And the Southbridge was the Io controller, huh?
And as you can see, some of the duties that the Southbridge had was the I. D. E in the state, a USB Ethernet
audio, the sea most memory. So it handled all the slower, less intensive duties of the motherboard, whereas the North the North Bridge was directly connected to the CPU. And again, it's if the heavy brunt of the lows
And again, as in newer technologies and as far as PCs are concerned as they advanced more and more,
the CPU is taking on Maura of the role of the North Bridge. In fact, some of the boards do not even have a north bridge chip anymore. It's all the just the Southbridge control of the less intensive things, whereas the CPU is handling them or heavy extensive duties of the motherboard.
So basically, what we've done today is giving you a background of the chipset and where the chips that began and why you began its evolution as to where motherboards are right now. And also, we looked at the diagram. It kind of
given you the background example as far as what the duties of the North Bridge chips that were in the duties of the South breach.
