welcome to performing a Microsoft Windows 10 insulation
in the first episode, of course, we've provided description of what was gonna happen and prerequisites for Windows and such things. In this episode, Episode two will discuss a few of the distinctive features that belong to the Windows 10 operating system. Thanks for taking this course
when those 10 is a full featured operating system.
What is an operating system? Yes, it's a program that manages all the work that a computer does.
The hardware layer that we show in the graphic there on the right is a physical computer. It's the computer hardware, the disc, the keyboard network interfaces, CPU memory displays, all those things
the executive service is, and the item above it represents the processes that managed internal operating system. They do things like send work to the CPU. They read and write from the disks. They display content on the monitors on behalf of an application program.
These executive service is all run within what called
kernel mode. It's a privileged environment that's reserved for operating system. Service is the service is air fixed, that is, they run as they're coated. They don't get changed by user applications or controls, then user really has no ability to access any of these processes.
Of course, rules like these can be bent, huh? You can consult the subway train library for courses and information on information, security and that kind of thing to learn about those
as we continue the user applications and their supporting processes, care for management and security and all those things they run within what called user mood user moods, a less restrictive state that runs processes that user applications can Ripley,
you know, directly manipulate
Let's take a example. Win Log on Dottie XY is ah, user mode system process that waits for the executive service is the press presses of the keyboard. It waits to hear control all the lead you're probably familiar with those keystrokes and that
key combination once received
causes. When log on XY to display a log in screen, do some other secure functions for on behalf of the user
user applications like Chrome Dottie XY, the Popil Google Web browser. Get past input, sends output through a library of application program interface Is or AP eyes that present common dialogues, and you'd recognize those is file open print.
It also contained this number of network service is like
ah D N s lookups domain names, Service's look ups and other Common Service's application programs. Use these AP eyes available to custom programs that are written by developers. Um, and even ones manipulated by users may be using Power shell or other string commands
that gets submitted and passed through the A P I
to the executive.
These all comprised Windows 10 operating systems specifically and really all operating systems. Generally, the flavors of Lennox Google, Android, apple IOS, IBM has E O s for the large systems are all examples of operating systems.
Now, this timeline displays the release history of Microsoft Windows.
Now, Windows 10 isn't your grandfather's operating system. We see window starting as version 1.0 there, and it provided graphical control of that ancient M S DOS operating system that Microsoft developed and released in 1985.
Going to the right.
We see the more complex version of 3.11 used to be called Windows for Workgroups, still only a graphical interface that that ran on top of DOS, but it had a network stack and multimedia capabilities it was pretty awesome.
And about the same time as you see in blue below,
Microsoft releases a full featured operating system. Windows NT 31 workstation.
This was a complete desktop OS. It provided support for multitasking compatibility of popular hardware. Ah, brand new file system and security model. Um, that's architecture is the ancestor of the Windows 10 operating system that we're talking about installing today
For the last 30 years until the day of this recording, Microsoft Windows runs on the vast majority of personal computers in the world. It's not uncommon to find older versions of Windows still running on computers and homes and businesses today. Truthfully, this desktop operating system, um, the distinction of that's important
now. Windows 10.
It is designed to support a single user interacting with programs on a laptop or desktop computer. It's a desktop operating system, or sometimes you'll hear it referred to as a client operating system.
Now Microsoft applies its Windows brand to server operating systems to the Windows 2016. Server is the current version, and these products have a similar controls and interfaces really has a shared common code base. But the server operating system is designed to run service is
they're called by multiple users or multiple clients and client
programs. At the same time, the service's include file sharing, print sharing, database management, Internet proxy service is those kinds of things server operating systems air really tuned to those kinds of workloads? But here in this page, we're talking about the Windows
desktop operating system market
in this next chart that we drill behind that window's presence we see when those 10 has a slight edge that is in an adoption over Window seven. According to this stat counter measurement that occurs on the Web. In fact, the Windows 10 adoption number just the past
that window seven
in December of 2018
words Windows eight. You might be asking, uh, some of you might even recall that Windows eight Metro interface that failed it had the tiles and no start button. The user's just really complained about that thing, and the whole operating system
and even Windows 81 of the
upgrade replacement with the start button, all got rejected. Windows seven, because of that still has a major spaced in this
I t market segment,
I ask myself, Is it why
performed a bit of, ah, unscientific study, and I asked assorted Windows seven users that I could reach a well, why didn't you upgrade to Windows 10 particularly in the time that it was free? The answers I got were pretty interesting. One person told me, Hey, when those 10 forces me to do up
states and those updates break computers.
Certainly there seen instances of this even to this day. Windows 10 home users, for instance, can't opt delay updates like Windows Pro and Enterprise can and instance where you know bad patches, released a small number of users or hurt truthfully. Despite that, you know, patching windows
and performing those kinds of security tasks are very important.
You know, if if,
immediate patch is our showstopper for you, then you need to consider the pro version of Windows 10 or or enterprise. If if if you can support that in your environment, many said, Hey, when those seven works, there's really no need to change in the short term. Okay, maybe you get away with that,
but Windows seven is 10 years old, and it really doesn't meet the demands. A current computing environment, and particularly in terms of security, and when support goes away for it, it would be far better to upgrade. You know, another says, Hey, when those 10 Microsoft grabs all your personal data
Well, Microsoft collects performance data about Windows.
It's certainly tied to your user and user history. But, you know, Facebook, Google, Amazon and all the others had really doing the same thing to you and in even greater terms. Um, the privacy tool that's building the windows will see it installed. Time
can really help us and limit the sharing and an anonymous data and limit what Microsoft collects and sees.
Now my favorite has to be.
The Windows 10 doesn't have the Windows Media Center application. You know, I think this is a problem there, bunch of hacks and you can get similar functionality. Other APS, um, I miss it, too, But don't let this stop you from upgrading to Windows 10.
You'll note on this Microsoft Support page. Standard support for Windows seven ended in early 2015.
Now in 2020 next year. From this recording, extended support for Windows 7 11 So well, all the free security updates, and you're not getting any feature updates Now that is. No functionality is going into Windows seven at all. Governments are government.
Other governments, large corporations and big entities can probably something
you know, afford to release purchase support fees from Microsoft and work out that kind of thing. The rest of us honestly will need to upgrade. You're really taking this course at the right time. You know many consumers and businesses. Um, we'll need your help to upgrade the Windows 10 the next year. There will really won't have a choice.
Okay, let's check and see what we've learned so far.
True or false
when was 10 is designed to run on server computers and run workloads that's designed for servers like file sharing, database and email service is
Although Windows 10 can run server programs, it was really designed for a single user. Use a client, we called it

free security updates. Window seven ended with mainstream support in January 2015.
That's false as well.
Feature updates ended in January 2015 for Window seven, but
free security updates will continue until supports and ends in early 2020. That is January 2020.
Good, good work.
Let's review the features that we presented in this episode.
An operating system or less manages all the work that a computer does
when those 10 is the latest of a life cycle desktop operating systems that have been developed and released over the last 30 years.
Today, it's the most widely used desktop operating system in the world.
Previous versions of Windows Air still heavily used when those seven, the second most heavily used Windows version, will not be supported in 2020.
This is a great opportunity to upgrade those installations. The Windows version 10
Thanks for completing this episode
in the next episode will discuss a few key features that included and when those 10.
