hi and welcome to lesson 1.5 bios components, features of the bios and the system set up that's going get started. So in this lesson we're gonna cover is an overview of the bio mes Biosystems. Set up utility configure and apply bios changes. And we're gonna learn about different settings that you can make in the bios.
And we're gonna understand also some security settings specifically around the supervisor password in the user password.
So let's go in. Jump right In
overview of the BIOS system utility Now not everything in bios is fixed a static. It has many changeable items. Now, if you've ever looked at the bios and probably your first impression of it, it was this
big means scary dos looking system that had a lot of readout information. But in actuality, the BIOS is a very, very important key to your computer.
Now it keeps track of hardware. Changes in your system,
accuse track of the number of hard drives, the boot order and the changes with these devices. When you add another device or take out a device, the BIOS reads this hardware information and logs it into the system and shows you that it's in the system and recognizes that hardware and displays it right there.
It also is a place where you can enable in disable key hardware or key features
such as us be virtual ization CPU features. You can unlock features that's not turned on by default again. That's depending on the motherboard manufacturing. But there's a lot of things that you can do with the bios in the vial set up beautifully.
The BIOS is the heart of your system, and it must be protected. And we're going to talk about some some security features that you can do to help protect the bios of your system.
Now, if bios is that important, think of it as not like a remote hacker. But if someone gain access to your system, if they can get into your bios and make changes, ah, lot of malicious things can be done within the BIOS. So again it is the core. It's the heart of your system, and it doesn't need to be protected.
we're gonna look at access through the BIOS. How do you access the bios now? It's gonna change depending on the manufacturer of your motherboard. Check your manufacture, manufacture documentation. But for the most part, during a Proust boot process, you're gonna have a small window of time to access the bios. And again, depending on a system, you're gonna have just a small blip of time. It could be right after the vendor logo. Whatever your men your hardware is whether it's B h, p r Dale, right after that local discipline of disappears,
there's gonna be a little small window to press a key. Whether that's gonna be the delete key, the escape key or sometimes the F two key. And that's all depending on the manufacturer of your system. So you're gonna have a small window of time. Where you gonna Internet system and you're gonna be able to enter into the biles?
Check your system manufacturer documentation. Just see how you would do for your particular motherboard. So what we're gonna do now we're going to jump into the lab and we're going to
speed of the process, meaning about already boot up the computer. And I've already went past the logo and I've hit the delete escape or the F two key, and we're gonna go right into the BIOS and we're going to see what changes we can make in the BIOS system. Sub utility. So let's go over to the lab.
We were in the bios of the system, and as you can see on this test system in our lab here, this is the Phoenix BIOS on This is an older text based files. But again, I just want to kind of give you the idea, an overview of the things that you can change in the bios.
So here on the main screen, you can see the product name, which the pro lion impel 110 G six system. It also has the Pro Lion Bios version the date. It also shows you the CPU type in a CPM speed. The physical cp use if this is the had more than one fiscal CPU and which joker in the bios
And again, the BIOS reads the hardware displays right here
in this text based system to show you where
pieces of hardware you have has moved on the line a little bit. The extended memory shows you how much memories in this system. Also, there's boot features on the system. That kind of shows you as far as what boost features are available in this system will come to that in later in later court and littered courses.
As you move over to the advanced half, there's other changes that you can make here in the BIOS and as we go up down the list a little bit, wake on land advanced chips that control events process for options. Iose device configurations, hard disk considerations. In here, you can see
it will show you again how many hard drugs in his system
as we move on down to use be configurations. You could turn USB ports on and off again, just showing you that there's some things that you control within the vials

And as you can see in the bottom, the ribbon on the bottom, right hand corner of 10 statement accent. So as long as you don't have a tennis date next it again, you can come here and experiment, play around and see what options that you can change here in the vials and again as we saw as we're moving through the BIOS. There's some things that
are just read only that you won't be a big change,
but there's some items that she would be a change in your vials.
So as you can see, there is a lot of changeable items inside the bios. A lot of things that's key to your system.
So because it's key to your system, let's talk on an important aspect about the BIOS set up. You tell me we're gonna talk about security now, an important note of security in the bio system of setup utility. There two types of passwords in the BIOS set of utility.
There's a supervisor password and the user past for password that's coming.
Explain what the differences are between the two. The supervisor password comes up and prevents unauthorized users from entering the BIOS system. Set up you tenderly now that's very key,
because just where we were at making changes in your system, you don't want an intruder to if they're on your system
to be able to boot and get into your Bibles. Because like I said earlier, a lot of malicious things could be done, as you can see for yourself. A lot of changes can be made, so the supervisor password prevents unauthorized users from entering into the bio system. Set up utility. That's your first layer the first gate right there. But there's also another thing that you can do as far as protecting your system.
The user password.
Now the user password comes up when the system is booted. Now this is an extra security feature that prevents unauthorized users from even accessing the system before the operating system loads.
So you got two layers of security in your BIOS. One protects the bios up utility, and the other one protects your system even before the US loads. So
the bios being the Hart in the key of your system. The brain, as I like to call it, has ah, defense defense in depth. You have a secure room supervisor password and a user password to protect your core of your system.
All right, so let's review what we've discovered and talked about and went through today. We reviewed the bio system. You set up utility, and you've seen all the changes that you could make in the bio systems up beautifully. Now,
a lot of bios is are gonna be changed? I'm different because you've just seen one type of example. There's going to be different Manufactures and vendors may even don't offer different capabilities, depending on your manufacturer. The U E F. I has a lot more features and robust functionality to it.
So again, depending on your manufacturer, those system those
capabilities rather will change. Or you'll have more capabilities. A ce faras accessing the system Bio City Set up utility. Check your motherboard documentation. It'll tell you how to get in there. Okay, so also we've went in and configured. Apply some Bibles changes You've seen how you can do that. You can play around in the BIOS.
You can either say the changes, or if you just want to poke around
and learn some more things, you're going to make changes and exit out of it without saving. That's a good way to kind of play around. Just make sure you don't save it because you can really, really, really mess up your system. Um, also, we learned about different settings in the BIOS, different things that the BIOS
recognizes. They keep shots off key hardware functions. You can turn utilities on like virtualization CPU features.
The again, the BIOS is the heart of that. And more importantly, we review security settings the supervisor password in the user password. And again, that static display that you thought was really so terrible and angry looking.
And actually, it's the key of your system is the key of the heart of your system. And it has layers of protection, the supervisor password and the user password. So
