Vulnerability Research Engineers focus on how systems fail, how systems can be made to fail, and how to prevent–or protect against–those failures. Therefore, a hacking mentality is necessary to be a good Vulnerability Research Engineer.

There is an increasing need for Vulnerability Research Engineers as attackers in the cyberworld constantly present new threats and exploit systems’ vulnerabilities. The most basic activities of a Vulnerability Research Engineer are to analyze common network services and software applications to discover new and potential vulnerabilities. A Vulnerability Research Engineer acts as the subject matter expert on system vulnerabilities, application vulnerabilities, and a system’s minimum security baseline. The Engineer will perform and review network, system, and application assessments and will determine the risks to a system.

Important aspects of this type of position include being able to develop and present risk mitigation strategies and being able to communicate findings to management. A Vulnerability Research Engineer also must be capable of responding to, and being actively involved in, system audits.

General Educational Requirements

Most opportunities for Vulnerability Research Engineers require a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree with course work in computer science, telecommunications, networking, engineering, or another computer-related field. Industry-accepted certifications usually are important for this position, but especially-talented people with the necessary skills and relevant experience may be hired on the basis of their experience alone.

Additional Qualifications

In addition to top-notch technical skills, a good Vulnerability Research Engineer must be committed to stay current with the vulnerability landscape and be up-to-date on current attacks or potential attacks. Because reports are the end product of a Vulnerability Research Engineer’s work, proven communication skills are necessary as is the ability to write clearly and concisely and make strong presentations.

An effective Vulnerability Research Engineer is self-motivated and has significant troubleshooting skills with the ability to quickly and accurately diagnose and mitigate threats and vulnerabilities to any system.
