With the increase in “cloud” computing, cybersecurity issues are of increasing concern to businesses, organizations, and government entities. This has increased opportunities for System Security Engineers who can provide hands-on technical engineering experience to an enterprise’s cloud security program as well as to other cyber security concerns.

A System Security Engineer ensures rigorous application of cyber security policies, principles, and practices of all information technology and cyber security services. The Engineer develops the resources and system components needed to solve complex cyber security problems.

The System Security Engineer’s responsibilities include secure design and architecture of complex web services and developer tools, performing risk-based security assessments and reviews, and building security tools. This individual evaluates security violations to determine the necessary corrective actions; and he assesses the impact, determines the probable damage, and suggests methods of damage control. The Engineer must have the ability to conduct computer forensics and follow-on analysis to build historical and predictive capabilities for cyber security incidents.

An important part of this position is participation in the efforts to promote security throughout the enterprise and to build good working relationships within the team and with others in the organization. A System Security Engineer is an integral part of defining cyber security requirements for the IT acquisition process and of assisting in the cyber security and IT budget process.
