An Operations Security Support Manager monitors events in an organization’s IT Operations that have the potential to compromise the safety and security of the organization’s personnel, offices, data centers, and corporate locations. The Manager provides support and manages escalation and communication during business disruptions.
An Operations Security Support Manager generally is responsible for the following activities in the Operations area:

  • developing and supporting strategic plans and projects to meet the organization’s operational security goals and objectives
  • reviewing standard operating procedures and protocols to ensure effective operations
  • performing analysis, design, and development of security features for system architectures
  • leading the team in support of all designated security tasks
  • providing information and tactical guidance to leadership during incidents
  • developing a deep understanding of operational risks
  • driving responses that will minimize the impact of risks
  • evaluating existing technical capabilities, processes, and systems and identifying opportunities for improvement
  • improving the above through innovation and operational change
  • conducting after-action reviews to document lessons learned and best practices


General Educational Requirements

Employers generally require a minimum of a Bachelors Degree for this position combined with several years of relevant work experience, preferably in an operations center. Most employers require an industry certification, and some employers may require an active security clearance.


Additional Qualifications

An effective Operations Security Support Manager, in addition to having strong technical competence, should demonstrate the following:

  • An ability to provide high-level briefings
  • Experience leading a team
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem solving skills
  • Outstanding communication skills
  • Strong decision making ability, especially during emergency situations
  • Strong organization and planning skills
