Computer network security has become a very important issue in companies, organizations, and government entities primarily because so much business is conducted online. One of an enterprise’s first lines of defense is the Manager of Information Systems Security who is responsible for overseeing and maintaining the integrity of the enterprise’s system.

Information security management is a process of defining a system’s security controls to ensure protection of the information assets from unauthorized access, use, disclosure, disruption, modification, or destruction. The Manager of Information Systems Security also fulfills a supervisory role and has management and training responsibilities for the network’s security staff.

The core of the Manager of Information Systems Security responsibility is to create the organization’s information security plans and policies by identifying the organization’s current security infrastructure and defining the type of security to be designed and implemented. A Manager of Information Systems Security also provides guidance for the analysis and evaluation of networks and security vulnerabilities and manages security systems such as anti-virus programs, firewalls, patch management activities, intrusion detection, and encryption. To carry out all duties effectively the Manager of Information Systems Security needs to have knowledge of currently available and effective security tools, business security practices and procedures, hardware and software security implementation, encryption techniques and tools, various communication protocols.

General Educational Requirements

Most employers require a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Science, or Management Information Systems for a management position in information systems security.  Many employers prefer a graduate degree, particularly an MBA with an emphasis on technology. This management position may require 15 of more years of experience in IT Security, Auditing, and Risk Management coupled with several years of management experience leading teams.

Additional Qualifications

In addition to technical and management experience, the Manager of Information Systems Security should possess excellent analytical skills; superior organization and planning skills; excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills; an ability to deal with shifting priorities, demands, and timelines; an ability to learn, understand, and apply new technologies, a demonstrated experience in developing and managing a comprehensive security program that balances risk with the needs and goals of the enterprise.
