Cyber security is no longer simply a technical function – it has become a business function in today’s enterprise. Therefore, it requires a greater level of integration with an enterprise’s business units, and it requires a comprehensive evaluation of existing programs and systems that were designed to provide a technical solution, not to be business functions and meet business needs.

Because of this broadening of the purpose of cyber security, the Manager of Cyber Security must work with multiple business areas, security, IT, and engineering resources to identify and plan cybersecurity systems that will meet or exceed an enterprise’s initiatives. The Manager of Cyber Security will help set the strategic vision and direction in the areas of security, risk, and compliance.

The Manager of Cyber Security also will determine which security, risk, and compliance issues to focus on and monitor; conduct security assessments; develop business models; implement security strategies that take into account the needs of the enterprise’s business areas; monitor vendor products and services to identify potential challenges and solutions; ensure integrity of the data related to cyber security initiatives; and ensure that established timelines are met.

General Educational Requirements

Most employers require a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in a technology-related discipline such as Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or Management Information Systems.

Most employers require up to five years of experience in a cyber security-related role. Industry certifications generally are required.

Additional Qualifications

In addition to broad experience in computer and network systems, including IT security, the Manager of Cyber Security also needs to have a working knowledge of  risk management, standards, and compliance. The Manager should possess the following:

  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Experience in producing presentations, proposals, and critical papers.
  • Superior English writing and verbal skills and the ability to communicate complex technical ideas effectively to a wide range of technical and non-technical staff members
  • Solid customer care skills
  • Demonstrated professionalism in appearance and actions
