Recent catastrophic events in the area of computer and network security breaches mean that Security Engineering has quickly become a rapidly growing field. This specialized field of engineering focuses on the security aspects in the design of systems that deal with possible sources of disruption ranging from natural disasters to malicious acts.

The IT Security Engineer provides ongoing infrastructure support, analyzes security use and design and participates in infrastructure security planning. The Engineer primarily is focused on ensuring the confidentiality of the enterprise’s data and the integrity and availability of the data and the system. The Engineer’s knowledge of and experience with emerging technologies, industry standards, support services, architectures, systems design and systems provides the Engineer with the background necessary to carry out the following activities:

  • evaluating and overseeing data security risks
  • developing security measures to safeguard information against accidental or unauthorized modification or destruction
  • providing IT security leadership
  • performing technical evaluations
  • establishing IT security standards, policies, and processes
  • providing the enterprise’s staff members with security awareness education
  • reporting on all security problems and mitigation actions
  • supporting security needs and concerns throughout the enterprise

 

General Educational Requirements

Most employers require, at a minimum, a Bachelor’s Degree in an applicable IT or auditing discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills. Some employers may require only a High School Diploma, GED, or Associate’s Degree if the candidate can demonstrate superior knowledge and capabilities. Security industry certification almost always is required.

 

Additional Qualifications

In addition to having knowledge of the areas of responsibility and a broad understanding of the IT industry, an IT Security Engineer also must have proficient verbal, written, and presentation skills and must be able to communicates clearly with credibility and confidence. The Engineer also must be analytical and must have well-developed organizational and problem-solving skills. The Engineer must be adept at multitasking and must remain current with existing technologies relevant to the areas of responsibility.
