People who are interested in a job where the primary purpose is to develop and implement procedures that ensure the security of information systems in compliance with regulations should consider the position of Information Security (Infosec) Specialist.

Information systems security consists of the processes and methodologies involved with keeping information confidential and available and with ensuring its integrity. A great deal of information systems security effort deals with computer information, but people working in this field also protecting data and information in all of its forms such as telephone conversations. The Infosec Specialist prevents and deters data attacks and breaches and protects against and responds to potential threats. This individual is responsible for delivering and documenting actionable and timely information services to mitigate IT vulnerabilities.

The Infosec Specialist performs risk assessments to determine what information poses the biggest risk and provides expert technical advice and guidance on risk management and assessment activities that will improve cybersecurity in the enterprise. Business continuity planning and disaster recovery planning are other important aspects of an Infosec Specialist’s duties because there must be continuity of an enterprise’s information technology systems even in the face of a data breach.

A company’s Infosec Specialist develops the policies and procedures that are required to defend against unauthorized access to systems, networks, and data. This will ensure the reliability and accessibility of all information systems. Other important duties are to coordinate the review and evaluation of the enterprise’s information infrastructure protection program and to help resolve conflicting priorities and recommend alternatives.

General Educational Requirements

This position generally requires a Bachelor’s Degree of Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Science, Information Systems Management, Mathematics, Operations Research, Statistics, or Technology Management. Course work should include developing or adapting applications, systems, and networks.

Additional Qualifications

Industry certifications and, depending on the employer, secret clearance generally are required to work as an Infosec Specialist. Other desirable characteristics are attention to detail, customer service skills, effective and targeted written and oral communication, and significant problem solving skills.
