Given that cyber security issues are evolving at an unprecedented rate, the position of Director of Cyber Security has become one of the most important and sensitive positions within an organization. A Director of Cyber Security has the overall responsibility for performing very technical and complex duties related to developing and coordinating all aspects of an organization’s data safety and security plans.

A Director of Cyber Security must be a strategic thinker who is able to obtain consensus among disparate entities within an organization, collaborate effectively with multiple groups, and execute plans efficiently and effectively. The primary duty of a Director is to create and implement a comprehensive information security plan –  including people, process, and technology – that secures an organization’s business activities, systems, and data.

A Director of Cyber Security works with multiple security, IT, and engineering personnel and resources to identify and develop project plans, project cost estimates, project recommendations, status reports, and executive presentations. The Director must constantly maintain a working knowledge of cyber security principles, and must understand the global implications of cyber security threats and how to protect against them.

General Educational Requirements

The most basic educational requirement for a Director of Cyber Security is a Bachelor’s Degree in electrical engineering, systems engineering, computer science, computer engineering, information technology, management information systems, or a related subject. Given the complicated and sensitive nature of this position, however, many Directors of Cyber Security are required to have a Master’s Degree in the field of cyber security or a similar subject. Some employers prefer that a Director of Cyber Security have a PhD.

Additional Qualifications

It is very important for a Director of Cyber Security to have significant experience – 10 to 15 years of more – in the field. The Director also must have certifications from professional organizations and must be a skillful negotiator who can gain support for change. Leadership skills and excellent abilities in written and oral communication are a necessity for working with diverse constituencies and staff members and for forming successful relationships with other leaders in the field of cyber security. Although a Director of Cyber Security’s work is highly technical, he must possess the ability to communicate with and understand the needs of those that are not technically savvy.

Excellent project management and organization skills are required as are the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines. A Director of Cyber Security must have the ability to meet budget requirements and deadlines and must have skills in marketing strategies, social media, computer applications, consulting skills, problem solving, and decision making.
